I know I just posted to the behavior forum like yesterday, but I have more questions. So Pepper’s cage came with a weird mesh floor in it, I took it out because I was afraid that she would get stuck in it, but now I’m wondering if I should put it back in to filter her poop. I would be less reluctant if it wasn’t the whole floor. Has anyone had any experience with their bun having mesh floors in their cages?

I wouldn’t really recommend mesh floors since I’ve heard of rabbits getting some pretty bad cases of sore hocks from them. As for the poops, have you tried litter training her? btw Pep is so adorable!!

My girl was on a mesh floor before i got her and it ruined her feet—broken toes, torn nails and a lifelong skeletal problem, leaving her prone to sore hocks- id strongly advise against them!

Rabbits usually litter train very easily given the opportunity to do so, and theres lots of tips for that on this site!

It depends on the type of mesh. Mesh that is 1″ by 1/2″ is the only type suitable for flooring-NEVER use hardware cloth. Also make sure it is facing the right side up; the wrong way will be uncomfortable for the rabbit and cause the floor to eventually sag. While mesh is definitely safe, it’s best to have a box or something for the bunny to sit on to rest (a mesh floor is like a tile floor- and would you want to sleep on a tile floor?). Almost all of my 8 rabbits have mesh floors as described, and none have ever had sore hocks or other foot problems. But it can happen, especially to Rex, which have very thin fur, and therefore very thin footpads. Try out the mesh, and if you notice her footpads getting thin or her legs getting stiff, switch it back.

Hearing these, I’m now super glad I didn’t leave it in her cage in fear of her getting stuck. Thanks Guys!

I had a really large cage from when I first had Harvey and then she later became free roam wit a couple of gates and cage went to basement. When Clover came it came back up until she was litter trained. Then it was retired back to basement. I use it now when we travel to Ohio and she has here x-pen back there. She has plenty of room and is safe from the cat. With my rabbits being free to roam I couldn’t justify spending a lot on cages.
