        Question for the forum ?

Emma is a 2 year old Angora rabbit – whose mate is Esme.

I noticed Emma’s shoulderblades become sharper about 2 weeks ago, and then each day she became a little thinner. Still no decline in eating! She eats with gusto !  She has no nasal discharge and not lethargic. but -then right before Christmas,  her hind end seemed a little wobbly.  Her poops were small so I put her on strictly hay – she’s typically on 80% hay anyway – and they went back to being larger again.

But she kept feeling thinner -now I could feel hip bones  – so I brought her to the vet. ( 5 days ago ) The  vet felt that since she was so bright eyed and active – temp 100.8 , obviously eating ( and eating right at the vets office ) and her teeth look good, — that it may be hair mats on her belly, restricting her movement so that she was losing some muscle mass.  The vet shaved the mats off.  Her weight was 8 pounds and the vet felt that was a good weight. ( However she WAS- bigger than her mate Esme – who is 10 pounds – So she’s lost at least 2 pounds. )

Now It’s 4 days later, and today I I brought her back in for blood tests. She is even thinner, her face even looks different. Her mate Esme, is constantly grooming her and appears worried. She is still eating great, and -trying- to hop around, but it looks like its harder for her. Suddenly she looks so fragile..  She’s always been a SUPER strong,  willful,  curious rabbit – so its like her spirit is still there but the body is weak. Vet says her abdomen still feels fine, temp 100.5 but she had lost a little more weight.   I will know the results of the blood on Saturday.

        My Question :

Has anyone had a rabbit that does not seem to be in pain when you touch her anywhere. Abdomen seems fine, eats really well, not lethargic — although does seem a little more quiet. She is also wanting to sit in her hay box more than usual, and last night when I checked on her — I saw she had jumped up on the sofa and was laying on my spot –which made me want to cry because I’ve never seen her do that.

Any advice or experience with this would be so appreciated!

This sounds like a very stressful time for you and your rabbit. Best wishes to you both.

My gut instinct says liver problems, which should show up on a blood test. Liver disease can cause weight loss, as well as other symptoms.

It’s great that you pushed for blood work and you are being attentive to these changes.
