        Hey,
I’m in need of some advice! I’ve got a 6.5 month old lop who is not yet neutered and has free roam of the entire flat. I’ve recently come back to my home town for Christmas & my dad told me about a neighbour who was talking about letting his rabbit out in to the wild as they were no longer able tlook after her and to cut a long story short, I now have a 2 year old Holland lop in my house waiting to come up to my university city with me! I’m incredibly apprehensive as I have an intact male at home & although the female has been spayed I don’t want to put them together until he is done.. I have a spare room for her but I need some advice on interaction as I’m used to spending a lot of time with my male as he was the only rabbit but now I have to divide my time between two buns, I’m scared that one bunny won’t get the interaction they require/deserve. I had booked my male in for his operation before Christmas but the vets had to cancelled due to a shortage of anaesthetic (?) so now we have to wait until Feb/March time.. how am I meant to go about keeping them separate yet still give them both what they need in terms of a bond with me, etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

        Thanks

          Hi there, welcome

Thankfully the female is spayed, so at least you don’t need to worry about accidental pregnancies! And so glad you can rescue her!

Since you have to wait quite a while for his neutered, you might want to just set them up to be side by side, so that one isn’t too lonely and the new girl can have more interaction with you. (Only do this is if you are 100% sure she is spayed though!). The best tools for bonding are extra x-pens and NIC cubes. NIC cubes are also great for making quick temporary housing that you can disassemble and re-configure once they are bonded.
You can use the pens to divide up the free-roam space in half with a buffer (so they can’t nip each other). Since he’s free-roam, it will be good for him to start getting used to another bunny being in “HIS” area. But, be ready for litter box habits to go out the window. This would happen even if she was in the other room, as he would smell her for sure.

Once he’s neutered and hormones have had a few weeks to settle, you can start pre-bonding cage swaps, where you swap who is on which side every day or two.

Thank you so much for the advice! That’s what I was considering doing, setting her up in the spare room for now but alloweing Benji I’m to that room for a while when either me or my partner are around. I also want her to be as free roam as possible but I do have a cage for her as she came with one and she is housed in it at night while I’m staying with my parents.
Is it normal to feel somewhat sad about getting a second bunny? She’s super sweet already but I just feel this deep sense of anxiety about not being able to give them both the attention they require due to me not being able to have them out together full time yet & I also feel as if I haven’t spent as much time with Benji yet (although this is silly because I’m only at university 3 half days per week so we get to spend so much time together but I feel that he may get a little left behind while I’m trying to make my girl comfortable!)
I’ll defintely be getting some X-pens as I’ve been many YouTube videos where they use them in the bonding process!

            Thanks again!

I think it’s very normal to feel unsure about the bonding process, and guilty for putting them through all the stress. And definitely normal to feel like you aren’t giving them each as much attention as you’d like to. But, it is all temporary, and assuming you are able to bond them, they will both be very happy!

Good to know I’m not alone with that one then haha!
I bought Luna back to my house in about 110 miles away from my parents house where I was keeping her while i was home & I put her in the cage and allowed Benji to come and say hello – he’s not gone really wiley and for the first time ever he’s tried to hump my leg and is honking around me and my boyfriend and being strange. When he was with her while she was in her cage he was running around and stamping his feet.
We’ve let Luna settle now, and made sure Benji only can roam the living room, kitchen and bathroom and Benji is still honking at me and demanding attention and circling around our legs and he will nudge at me and climb on me if I’m not stroking him!

                What’s going on ahaha??
