Hello everyone. I have a small breed bun she is almost 1 year old. She is very picky with hay so I get stocked up on the brand she likes from one particular shop here. Always.. Today we ran out so I gave her her last and went and got 3 1 kilo bags. When I got home to my pure terror and panic I discovered all 3 smell like mold!!! Some of it is a biy wet aswell. I have no hay for her and the shops are closed for the weekend 10 mins after I got home! I contacted the seller via FB he said all the bags are like that and there is no way to find her anymore till Monday. I’m not gonna even begin to explain how terrified I am awful and irresponsible I feel that I am so freaking stupid. I live near a farm that has organic(I trust noone at this point) clover hay.
Can I give her some till Monday morning so she doesn’t get sick from hunger? She has pellets but I know it’s not enough! Here they give it to meat rabbits but they also give a ton of inappropriate rubbish to them so I’m not trusting their advice. Please, if you have anu suggestions or advise.
P.S. I live in Greece so unfortunately finding a shop that works Sundays in my area is not an option

          Hi Christiner

While clover hay is safe for rabbits to eat, it’s not ideal for an adult rabbit. Legume hays like clover & alfafa are higher in protein then grass hays. So they are ok for pregnant rabbits, young, growing rabbits and ones been grown for food.

The richer hay can cause some messy poop. You could give a little but I wouldnt want her in it too long.

Is there grass you can cut for her? (The grass that grows as weeds, not lawn).
That would be a good substitute for hay until you can get some more.

Grass yes. But what kind? I live in a village so I am sure I can find some unsprayed grass and weeds. I’m contacting farmers out here but they’ve got only straw and clover. Maybe some for horses but I have no idea what’s in it. And my backup oxbow orchard hay is too coming on Monday.

Meadow grass would be fine (sometimes called bluegrass). You may even find orchardgrass.

Do you have wild rabbits there though?

There are wild rabbits yes. Found her some grass plus a bit of clover and her veggies that she normally eats and the pellets. She seems fine but I probably won’t be able to sleep for a week till I know for sure. Ordered enough hay for a rabbit farm from different places and let the seller know his product is rancid. I will let you know in few days how she does and thank you so much for your help! Now I know to NEVER to rely on one source of hay again, I just hope and pray my irresponsibility won’t hurt her or worse!

Try to also not beat yourself up too much… I’ve run out of hay knowing that my Bun only eats one type and it’s not sold in stores in my area but it is easy enough to place the order a week or so ahead when I see I’m beginning to get low… even if it is just on Amazon with prime 2 day shipping! And I’ve still managed to run completely bone dry last year during the middle of the winter… (I’m learning to keep a 5 lb. box always on hand especially in late winter). And, I’ve also gotten a bad box as well… but what I’ve seen from my Bun is that yes, I was freaking out thinking about her hungry tummy and how cld I, but she was eager to eat pellets and veggies and she didn’t starve. It wasn’t the most optimal, but it happens once in a while and we’re on it when it does… last time I ran out I picked up Oxbow Timothy stacks and to my total surprise and delight, she ate them… so I always try to have a box of those as emergency backups

Thank you so much for saying that.It sucks when I try my best and still manage to screw things up. Bunnies are so sensitive and very perticular with their care I find that even after a year of caring for her I still can’t say I’m relaxed lol. She sometimes fakes death by flopping on her side to sleep. Scares me every time lol. All that said I love her to bits. Now the update : I purposely waited a week for the update because I wanted to explain exactly what happened in case it helps someone in the future. Snowflake ate the clover, she loved it but it didn’t agree with her. Either I gave her too much or her stomach didn’t like it, I don’t know. She had gas (I think that because she started stretching alot). So at the end of the whole day without normal hay her poop got hard and small and she wouldn’t eat the cecotropes(found a bunch of them in her litter box for the first time ever) .The amount of poo was less aswell. Monday morning (after approximately 24 hours on clover and grass) I got her the regular hay and didn’t give her any pallets in the evening to encourage her to eat more hay. Next morning her poop was lots better and by the evening it came back to normal. Sense Wednesday she is totally back to normal. She would run around normally the whole time ,jumping and she was all cuddly and normal acting. Thank you guys again for the help and understanding!
