My bunny is young, only about a year old. He’ll groom his sides and face and ears but when it comes to his genital area he wont groom there. I’ll find mats around the room sometimes so I decided to add grooming down there to his care but I’m worried something could be wrong. He should be able to groom down there but he either can’t/refuses and as a result he’s started to become a bit smelly. I’m worried he could have an infection. Of course I might just be overreacting and he’s smelly because of the mats.

I can’t clean down there that well because he only has so much patience and will run away if I take too long. I don’t want to stress him by keeping him with me for an extended amount of time. Not to mention it’s sensitive and he doesn’t like me touching at all. I’m just worried somethings wrong and thats why he wont groom. I thought I should get some advice before taking him in for a checkup.

How long has he not groomed it? I would be worried of an infection down there and that’s why he doesn’t want to groom. Is he neutered? I would be worried of a mass growing on the testes( benign or not) or twisting of the testes. Does he want to bite you when you touch down there? Maybe he hurt his back or something so he can’t reach that far. Does he still eat his cecetropes?

he hasnt been grooming for awhile. he is neutered and nothing seems out of place if that helps? im not a vet though so i wouldnt know for sure. he doesn’t bite just shows general signs of grumpiness, trying to get out of my grasp but he’ll still enough for me to clean for a bit. he has been eating his cecetropes. nothing seems out of the ordinary aside from him just not grooming and the occasional mat on the floor. im not sure if it’s because he was actually trying to groom down there and just plucked it out or if it fell out though.

That does seem odd if he is acting normal everywhere else. I would take him to the vet and see what they can come up with. Hopefully they can find something!

Do you observe him eating his cecotropes? I wonder if there is difficulty reaching down there in general. Typically private-area grooming occurs during cecotrope grooming. I find Wick always precedes and follows cecotrope eating with a few private licks, as if he’s cleaning the plate, haha.

I don’t usually see him eating them, he usually does that in private lol but he’s tried to lick me multiple times before and his breath smells like poop.. I’ve seen him try to groom down there occasionally but I guess he must not be able to reach all the way down there. It’s right on the underside of his tail it’d make sense. He’s not overweight so I don’t know why he can’t reach but as long as it’s not an infection I’m alright with cleaning for him.

The underside of the tail is the hardest. I actually can’t recall wick cleaning that ever. He does the top, but I dont specifically remember him licking the bottom.

                      Does he have longer fur?

yeah his fur is really soft and fine and the underside has longer fur. so it probably is just a cleaning issue but i panicked lol i just wanted to be sure in case it sounded like an infection
