I gave my bunny iceburg lettuce, I heard on the radio that romaine lettuce had a recal on it. I accidentally gave my bunny a little iceburg lettuce on Wednesday the night before Thanksgiving. The next morning he was eating, drinking, pooping or peeing. I got worried so I immediately looked up on here and on Google and called my vet. They said to give more Timothy Hay, apples and give water by a sirenge and to give belly massage. I have been doing this and he is pooping, eating and drinking from me. He used to greet me and follow me. Now he sees me and he will come to me then hid under my bed or lay on his carpet near his house. He won’t come in the kitchen. Please let me know what I’m not doing. I just want him back to his old self.

Iceberg lettuce isn’t as hazardous to rabbits as is commonly believed. In the olden days it was believed to cause fatal diarrhea in rabbits. If your bunny is pooping, eating and drinking, he does not have diarrhea. Diarrhea is runny, mucosy or gel-like and there is no round poop seen at all.

The advice the vets gave you is good, although I’d hold back on the apples, that’s mostly to entice the bun to eat. Fruit has too much sugar to be healthy in larger amounts.

You can give your bun simethicone gas drops (human baby gas drops). It is not absorbed by the body but acts locally in the intestine. It’s often very effective when a bun has a tummy ache and Medirabbit says it’s ok to give on suspicion of gas. It can be bought at Walmart or Tesco etc, it’s on the baby shelf.

How old is your rabbit? I’m asking because I think there could be some other reason for his change in behavior.

I would guess there is some part of the treatment regime he doesn’t like, possibly the syringe or the tummy massage. Like Bam says, iceberg is not dangerous in small quantities. Current thinking is that it is just very low in nutrients so a bun could get malnourished on it, but that would take a lot. You can just go bak to your standard routine: your bun should be back to normal soon enough.
