Hi. I am relatively new to the bunny world and I am still figuring things out. I have had Mango, my mini-rex rabbit, for just over a year. When I first got him, I partially litter box trained him. He did not poo in the litter-box, only pee. I went away for a few weeks not long ago and left him with a bunny sitter. I came back to find out that he stopped using his litter-box completely. I decided to try re-training him. My efforts were not successful. He still did not poo in the litter-box but he didn’t pee either. I continued my attempts by moving the bedding that he peed on into his box. Sometimes I notice some wet spots in the litter-box. However, I am not sure if it is on purpose or just in the right place at the right time. I have also noticed he seems to pee in the same place in the center of his cage (I am trying to figure out the best way to make him free-range. The first step has to be litter-box training.). I was wondering if him peeing in the same spot territorial and it could be fixed with getting him neutered. My vet told me that getting a rabbit neutered is risky. Is getting a rabbit neutered risky? Would it fix his litter-box skills? Is it possible to train him to poo in his litter-box? If these questions were answered that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

          Hi there, welcome

One of the main reasons people neuter is to improve box habits.

So yes, if you are hoping to have him free-range, neutering is the next step. If your vet thinks it is risky, look for a new vet who is more rabbit savvy. It’s true that there is always a risk anytime an animal goes under anesthesia, but rabbit medicine has improved greatly, and neuters and spays have become much more safe.

That said, it’s important to find a vet who is very comfortable with the procedures, and it’s perfectly acceptable to ask them how many they have done, and what their success rate is.

Neutering should improve all parts of his litter training.

Do you put bedding down in his whole cage? Keeping bedding just in his litterbox should help!
