I moved into a new apartment about 3 weeks ago. Since the move, my rabbit keeps wetting himself. I called my vet and he said he’s just marking his territory because of the move.. but it’s been 3 weeks already and now he seems to be developing urine scald. His skin looks red and irritated, and the area is balding. I constantly wash the urine off with water and blow him dry, then clean his cage. Any one have any knowledge they can share? Thanks!

A rabbit that is marking territory won’t do so by peeing on himself so I don’t understand your vet’s ‘diagnosis’ I would get him checked out, preferably by a different vet! He could have a UTI.

I agree with Sarah. When rabbits mark with Irvine they tend to spray the urine, very often up walls, to a surprising height. I think it’s more likely that your rabbit has a UTI. That can cause incontinence and urine dribble. For that he would need antibiotics. It could have been triggered by the move, because a change of environment is always stressful for a rabbit, and stress takes a toll on the immune system. I’d call the vet again or try to find another vet.

You can put a barrier cream on his skin after washing and drying him, to protect the skin against moisture. A thin layer of Vaseline will do.

I guess I’ll have to bring him back in and be more insistent thank you!

I would suggest using a different vet that is rabbit savvy as that would have been a red flag immediately when you called. Let us know how it goes!

                  thank you everyone!!

One thing I am noticing is I let my bun run around the apartment a few hours every day and he doesn’t pee at all outside his cage (he’s litter box trained). He only pees in his cage, so his pee seems controlled… although he’s peeing in the actual cage and sitting in it and not just peeing in his litter box now. What do you all think about that?

Very hard to find rabbit experts where I live so thanks for answering
