My bun is 3 months old and I’m having a hard time with his hay. He gets a little alfalfa, unlimited Timothy and then some meadow and orchard grass mixed in as well. However he doesn’t seem very interested in anything other than alfalfa. He will eat some of his other hay but mostly just makes a mess with it. He likes to dig around in it so I put some hay right on his litter and some in a hay feeder above his litter to try to minimize the mess. Either way he seems to just pull hay out and make a mess everywhere. I don’t mind the mess so much as the fact that I’m finding it really hard to tell how much hay is getting eaten and how much is just getting tossed around. He also tends to pee on the stuff in his litter tray which sucks because he’s wasting a lot of hay. His poops are okay but I’d like to see them a bit bigger and lighter. He also gets about a tablespoon of baby pellets in the morning and another in the evening. Should I be cutting out/reducing his pellets or alfalfa? He’s still growing and is pretty thin as it is so I’m worried he won’t eat enough that way but I’m hoping to change his habits if possible before he gets older.

To be honest, I’d scrap the alfalfa hay. As long as his pellets are alfalfa based he’ll be fine. Most bunnies prefer the alfalfa, but he’ll need to be off it in 3 months anyways, so its better to just scrap it altogether. Eventually he’ll realize he’s not getting more and he’ll eat it. My Asriel was like that when I transitioned from young pellets to adult pellets. Eventually he realized he wasn’t getting more and he’d eat them. Since he’s young, you can increase his pellets, 2 tbsp a day is what I feed my almost 2 year olds. At that age I was giving 1/4-1/2 cup a day. So if you’re weight concerned, I’d up the pellets a little and cut out the alfalfa so he eats more of the other hays.
