Hiiiii everybun. I have been struggling with allergies for years but it has only been in the last year or so that I’ve noticed an increase in symptoms. Particularly runny nose, itchy/watery eyes, and sneezing. I’ve been trying to find a good plan of action but so far there have been ups and downs.
I have seasonal allergies (spring/fall) and react to Timothy hay. I have been using orchard grass for Olaf since I got him three years ago and it seems to work best for both of us. I tried oat hay for a while but he didn’t tolerate it well diet-wise.
I am also allergic to dogs and cats so being an animal lover has been a struggle. Olaf is my only pet at the moment.
I used to take Claritin (loratadine) but felt like it wasn’t working. Now I’ve been taking 24-hr Allegra (fexofenadine) for about a month and it has been working wonders on my allergy symptoms. Nose isn’t running, eyes arn’t itching, and I feel super clear and refreshed.
The problem now? Allegra has been making my eyes SUPER dry. They get red by the end of the day and feel rough and irritated. I tried eye drops but the relief is temporary. Struggling to accept an annoying side effect for the sake of an otherwise helpful drug.
What do you use or do to relieve your allergies? I want to try allergy testing but that probably won’t happen until next year. Thank you for your thoughts and help!
I don’t personally have allergies, but my little sister had terrible hay fever. She went through the shot series, where they basically inject you with the allergens at a certain interval (you stay in the Dr office for a bit to make sure you don’t have a negative reaction). It worked wonders for her (her hay fever was almost debilitating), so if you are at the point of being fed up, it’s worth asking your doctor about.
You have to be committed to going in and getting the shots over a long period of time. I can’t recall how long the whole process was, but I think it was over a year or so? The interval is short at first (every couple weeks), then it gets longer (every few months).
I have an acquaintance who also went through the treatment and also had amazing results.

I have terrible hay fever when the seasons change (New England, 4 seasons of agony) and I also have pine and grass allergies. So in the same boat minus pet dander! I take Claritin most of the time because I get the least side affects with it. My husband has used Zyrtec for his with some relief, maybe it’s worth a shot to see how that goes for a bit? I’m not sure if the active ingredients are the same or not. I also use Flonase and Albeuterol when things are particularly troublesome. Have you thought of maybe combining Claritin with something like Sudafed? I did it back in college when trips to the pharmacy were sparse. It did a good enough job.
Hope you can find relief ♥️ And of course that Olaf can continue to bring you lots of love and cuddles ?
Nothing worked for me anymore so I finally decided to do allergy shots. I started in June this year, 2 shots every week. I won’t be up to full strength until December. I still have allergies and I haven’t noticed much improvement yet. =\
Would taking a reduced dose of the Allegra be worth a try maybe?
Thanks everyone! I really appreciate the replies.
Dana: I have been thinking about shots and it is really good to hear that she found relief with them! I’ve been curious and I appreciate your sharing that story. I’ll definitely look into it now.
A & B: Thank you! Zyrtec was next on my list of things to try so I’ll give it a shot next if things don’t get any better. I never tried a combo of things so that may be a good option, too. Combining forces!
LBJ: Sorry to hear you haven’t been able to find what works best for you. I hope the shots start working eventually. Everyone seems to say they take a while to see results but I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you!
jersey: Good idea! Maybe that would take the edge off the dry eyes but still keep my symptoms in check.
We’ll see! I’m going to try a few other OTC options and if it doesn’t work out I suppose I’ll have to get tested and maybe pursue shots.
I remember from past discussions on here that Claritin D was a popular choice.
Also, this thread made me think of neti pots! Lol
Remember when using neti pots became quite popluar?
I use cetirizine, that’s the active component in Zyrtec. It doesn’t do much for my timothy hay allergy though, so I try to stay away from timothy hay. Since most hay I can get here has timothy in it, I serve Vilde that type of hay in other rooms than the bedroom. In the bedroom he gets oat and orchard, only he doesn’t seem to like orchard unless it’s the orchard I’ve picked locally and dried myself, and I’m running out of that because Vilde, I’m pleased to say, devours hay.
I’ve tried Allegra but saw no difference from cetirizine, but the price is 5 times as high, so I’m sticking with cetirizine =)
I found the Zyrtec wasn’t working for me this year, so I’ve switched to fexofenadine, it works well for me but yesterday was a really bad day and it didn’t seem to do anything at all. I prefer it to zyrtec though as zyrtec seems to block me up rather than prevent symptoms, whereas fexo seems to reduce my symptoms without blocking me up. We have an air purifier in the lounge room, that’s more for hubby and his rabbit/hay allergies.
Basically, I take a pill, hope it works, and carry tissues with me everywhere during hayfever season ![]()
Benedryl – A little bit, but makes me loopy (not drowsy, just loopy)
Allegra – Nope
Zyrtec – Nope
Singulair – Nope
Claritin – Works OK, but instant sinus infection
Xyzal – Works pretty good actually, but… insomnia, legs crawling, headache, dizziness, had to pee like a zillion times, etc. I just couldn’t stand the side effects.
Several nasal sprays – Nope
That’s why I pretty much gave up and went with the allergy shots. Allergy testing was pretty easy, so you might consider it. At least that way you’ll know exactly what you’re allergic to. My husband insisted I was allergic to everything, but there are actually a lot of things I am not allergic to (grass and tree pollen, for example).
Claritin D is what I take and it works wonders!
I’m an Aerius girl because my worst allergy symptoms are skin and eyes. I also take Singulair for my asthma. I have found that a good moisturizer, a nice humidifier, Refresh eye drops from my opto, and spray eye refresher really help in various combinations if I’m wearing my contacts.
We also switched to orchard, but the quality available here is crap so far, so had to go back to SPS 3rd cutting timmy. Quelle horreur!
I remembered why my fexofenadine wasn’t working. I was having it at breakfast time, the same time I have orange juice. Fruit juices just drastically lower the effectiveness of fexo. So now I’ve switched to taking it in the evening instead and it works. They really need to write it on the box.
That’s interesting! Didn’t know that because I’ve also never come across that contraindication. Huh… go figure. ?
