Cyrus, my 3.5 yr old 9 lbs New Zealand stopped eating very suddenly yesterday morning. Clearly not behaving normally and in pain. Stopped pooping over the course of the day but was still peeing. Taken to vet yesterday evening and x-rayed/palpated. Bladder seemed normal. No blood work.

Some sort of oblong mass in stomach, possibly hair or dehydrated food.

Is being given metacam, motility meds, and CC. Pooping some again this morning, but very little pee and seems to be retaining a lot of water.

Is water retention normal during an episode of GI stasis?

I don’t remember it from my pervious bunny’s episodes and haven’t seen it mentioned explicitly anywhere.

During an episode of stasis, water gets absorbed from the stomach and he food in the intestine dries out. This is why it’s often not enough to give water orally. Sub Q or even IV fluids should be given to help soften the intestinal contents. When there’s a GI blockage, gut motility drugs could potentially make matters worse.

Here is a good article about GI stasis in rabbits:
          http://vetgirlontherun.com/veterinary-continuing-education-gastrointestinal-tract-stasis-rabbits-vetgirl-blog/

There are medical terms in this article, for example parenteral. Parenteral means “administered or occurring elsewhere in the body than the mouth and alimentary canal.”

I cant find anything about water retention and stasis.
