This may seem like a sad post, but alas it’s for the best. I took the boys for nail trims at the vet on Saturday and we had a lengthy conversation about Bombur’s health. I think we both believe it’s for the best if we discontinue bonding and leave the boys as solos. As most of you know, Bombur frequently requires vet care due to his EC. The vet has described the way the condition has shown itself in Bombur is as a chronic condition, rather than a bunny who experiences acute flare ups. This basically means the little man will need to be on treatment for EC quite frequently. The multiple vet visits may frequently disturb their bond, and we’d potentially have to keep rebonding them. Not only this but the vet confirmed Bombur’s eyesight has deteriorated as a result of his condition. He’s still a cuddle bun with us, but it does make him jumpy overall as he can’t really process all the sights his eyes are taking in. We noticed before this was causing issues with them during sessions. So we are halting all further bonding. We intend to get Az a friend in a few years when we have the time, space, and money. But for now we’ll just shower them with extra love ?

Thank you for the update and the care you are given both Az and Bombur. I think this epitomizes an excellent example that there are some scenarios where bonds cannot work, but that does not mean you cannot have both rabbits living happily if you are a committed owner. Drawing that boundary between them may be hard, but as you’ve clearly expressed, it is for the best.

How spoiled the two will become.

Thank you Wick ? it may be a tad disappointing, but it’s what is best overall. I get comfort in knowing that they can still at least see and interact with each other throughout the day just having their cages next to each other and being able to share a play space. I think it does make a difference for them to just have another bunny around.

Not gunna lie I’m sad that we won’t have any snuggle pics of the boys! ? But it is obviously for the best. It’s nice that they’ll have each other as a neighbour, I’m sure that will be a comfort for them. I’m sad to hear that Bombur’s eyesight has deteriorated – is that something that will continue or is it stable now? Impossible to say?

It’s impossible to say right now. It’s not super bad and there’s no cataracts, which is positive. But overall it appears to be his depth perception and nothing more.

Awww….sorry to hear that. I’ve never had any bonded buns and they lived happily as neighbours in the bunny room.

Sad to hear this, but it does sound as though it’s for the best. I was wondering if some of the issues you were having were due to B’s health. It will definitely be easier to monitor him as a solo. I agree that neighbors is better than nothing! I think buns take a lot of comfort in just seeing other buns around. They think “hey that bunny is relaxed, I guess it’s safe for me to relax too”

Thanks Dana, especially for all your advice during the lengthy process Yes, I think they make excellent neighbors. Poor Az, I think he’s finally realized it’s not going to happen and now he’s demanding he’s always out and playing and with us.

Ah, well I’m hopeful that it won’t get any worse, I’m glad that there are no signs of cataracts.

It must be frustrating for you, having to keep them completely separate long-term but it would be so much easier to monitor his health that way. It’s great they both have a strong bond with you and being neighbours as well, I doubt they’ll feel lonely so that’s good too

Aww, I’m sorry to hear this <3 But you're right, I'm sure they'll get lots of happiness and companionship through living as neighbours. As you know, my buns just fell out at the vet, so if vet trips will be frequent, I think it probably is for the best.

Well done on making such a tough decision <3
