I’m watching a year-ish old male rabbit for my friend. He had a lot of the information for this rabbit incorrect, and I have figured out a lot about rabbits by using this website, so I figured I’d make an account and ask about this eating habit. This rabbit was given to me with a bag of sweet meadow hay which he ate until it was gone. I didn’t know about hay preferences at the time so I just got him some Western Timothy from Oxbow, which he liked a lot! He ate it till it was gone. . . so I bought more because why wouldn’t I. He wouldn’t eat it. So I bought him different kinds: orchard, meadow, botanical, 2nd and 1st cutting timothy, basically every kind of Oxbow. I finally found a hay he LOVED; Oat! So I am currently using this. Until I got a different kind of Oat hay from this website and he ate that alright, but what I noticed is he started eating just the flowery bits and leaving the actual hay. Now he digs through the whole pile eating only the flowery bits and never eating the actual hay. He wants more hay to dig through before he’s even done with the rest of the hay now. I’m at a loss. He eats about 2 cups of wet veggies and sometimes I give him a little bit of pellets every other day and some baked apple treats. He has a stone bowl and a bottle of water that he drinks a normal amount from. Is there something I’m doing wrong to warrant this behavior or is he just a brat??
The attached picture is what he does now. He digs through the hay to find the pieces he wants and leaves huge piles of hay to waste.
