Hello everyone!! First time posting I just don’t know where else to ask!!

I just recently adopted a 3 year old holland lop bun named Pickles, and he is the first rabbit I’ve ever had. He is currently recovering from GI stasis and his recovery has been rocky. Long story short, he was hospitalized twice and when we brought him home from his second hospital visit 4 days ago he was given laxitone and mylicon drops in addition to the miloxicam and cisapride (and critical care) he was given from his first hospital visit. I noticed that ever since he’s been on the two new medications, he has been drinking a lot more water. Like A LOT more. I took him back to the vet yesterday for a follow up appointment and the vet states that this is not a usual side effect of these medications, so I’m not sure if I should be worried?

So I’m reaching out to you all! Has anyone else had this same occurance with their buns taking these medications? His excessive thirst just started with the introduction of the laxitone and mylicon drops so I would think they are related, but my vet thinks this is unusual. Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated!!!

My buns never experienced this on any of those medications. And my buns have been through a lot. Do you know how many millimeters he is drinking?

Depending on how long stasis lasted, they can grow points on their molars from not eating hay and cause them so drink more water to help soothe the pain. One of mine was hospitalized for a couple of days with stasis and she developed points and needed a dental. Did the vet check his molars? Also, the vet should have done a full blood panel before getting treated for stasis, during and after the hospital stay to make sure his organs are working fine. Mine was hospitalized for a week when he had stasis so I know how stressful it is, especially when recovering.

Yes, so my vet says that his molars are pretty pointed and I am planning to have them shaved down once he’s fully recovered from the stasis. I didn’t know that drinking excess water could be a result of the molar issue as well. His previous house never fed him hay and he was never taken to the vet until I adopted him in September. His molars never seemed to give him any issues until now but the vet agrees that I will have to have them shaved down. Thanks for your response!

I’m glad he’ll have his molars taken care of! Thank you for adopting him! Some buns that have a dental problem will drink too much to alleviate the soreness in their mouths. You also sometimes see it just after a molar burr, when there’s remaining soreness. Ask your vet if you can get a prescription for a painkiller (metacam) to give after the molar procedure. That will help him regain his appetite more quickly.
