I got a baby bunny (about one month old) from a local breeder. At what age can I start to feed him leafy greens? Do I have to wait until he is three months old?

He is way too young to be away. He should’ve been a minnimum if 6 weeks.

Anyways ONLY pellets and hay until 6 months. Especially since he should’ve been on milk still.

Yes, I agree that he is too young to be away from his mom. You might want to have him checked out by a rabbit savvy vet to make sure he’s doing OK since he is so young.

Amend that, 8 weeks. Bunnies are typically weaned from their moms around 5-6 weeks and need to really be with them until 8 weeks to ensure that they are their healthiest. As Dana suggests, a vet is very much necessary because to be honest he should be on a milk replacement and not really on solid foods. He also needs to be monitored consistently as young buns away from their moms too early can become very sick quickly and it’s almost always fatal.

Greens are 3 months, and fruits/ sugary veg are at 6 months. Pellets and hay until 3 months, and make sure it’s a good quality alfalfa based pellet with no seeds/fruit/nuts mixed in.

Here’s a good article by the House Rabbit Society on feeding young/orphaned buns and what the appropriate time to leave their mum is and what you can do to help them give them their best chance: https://rabbit.org/domestic-baby-bunnies-and-their-mom/ and here’s an article on diet https://rabbit.org/faq-diet/

                Hope this helps

That is very young. If you want to supplement milk so your bunny gets the health benefits 2 parts goats milk 1 part KMR and 1 part water works very well. Especially if you add a small amount of heavy cream. This is not a basis to the diet and should only be used in cases that need it. Try getting it on high quality pellets and hay ASAP

Goodness me, he was away from his bun mum at only 4 weeks old? That’s so incredibly heartbreaking. As A&B said, bunnies should remain with their Mum til they’re 8 weeks old. I believe they should start being weaned at around 6 weeks but obviously that doesn’t happen overnight which is why babies should stay with mum those extra couple of weeks.

It’s not your fault obviously, it’s the irresponsible breeder’s fault but now you need to do the best you can to ensure his safety. Please take baby to a vet to get him checked out and monitor him carefully. Your vet will advise you what to do in regards to his diet.
