So I’ve completed my move to Ottawa. I have to get a different brand of

wood pellets for litter. My petstore in Vancouver sold a 40lb bag of them, but I haven’t found a pet store in the area I’m currently staying at that stocks those. I found what I thought was a suitable replacement and similar product at Canadian Tire. But I was quite surprised at the difference in colour. I can’t find the woods that it is made of, but of course being kiln dried that shouldn’t matter too much right?

I’m fairly sure this is a suitable litter, but would feel better if anyone else had some input as well just cause i’m a paranoid bunny slave. I’ve linked the product below. On the packaging it does specify that it can be used for pet bedding, but I’m not sure if I can assume that means for rabbits as well.

Anyways, it’s probably fine and I’m just being too overly cautious, but figured it wouldn’t hurt to double check on here.

edit: they’re quite a bit darker than the pellets I used to use and am used to seeing people use for rabbits.

I haven’t seen those before. Looking online I would think it’s safe, but it doesn’t specify the wood used. Can you use amazon to buy wood pellets? I know many people use different kinds of wood pellets but I don’t know if it’s pine or not. I didn’t see that tbey are kiln dried online.

Hopefully someone else can chime in!

The wood pellets I can get here are never specified. I’m assuming they’re mostly spruce and pine, because those trees are the most common here. I don’t think it matters much as long as your bun don’t ingest them, and as long as the litter box is in a reasonably well-ventilated place. I’d not use wood pellets at all in the type of hooded car litter box that looks like a carrier almost. All wood pellets give off a certain amount of carbon monoxide and would not be 100% safe in a small closed space that has barely any ventilation.

@bunnyhouse, yeahh I was looking to see if they specified the kiln drying as well. But in trying to research that it seemed like any compressed pellet is kiln dried since it seems that heat is required for a part of the compression process. I could do amazon, going forward I might do that actually since that would be significantly easier than trying to lug home a 40lb bag. I’m at my mums for a month until I move into an apartment since I just moved back to Ottawa from Vancouver, so getting these at a hardware store was the best I could do in the immediate time. But yeah, if shipping isn’t too bad I think I’ll do amazon since I will not have a car after I move. Although there is a horse supply store somewhat nearby I want to check out. They’ll probably have the pellets, and hopefully some hay since Sully’s been spoiled by very fresh hay that the rabbit sanctuary in Vancouver sold and got in bulk from nearby farms.

@bam I would think so as well. Well, assuming that you’re also somewhere in North America. Either way, I think spruce and pine are the most common here too. Thank you, that is very good information to know. He has a regular open litter box so that is good. While I’m temporarily at my mum’s we’re both in the basement but it’s a pretty big room so I think it’ll be a good open space for ventilation. When I was trying to find information about this I read some stuff similar to what you’re saying about off-gassing but everything that mentioned it didn’t give that much information and was making me a bit paranoid, and confused :p

They are probably ok. Watch to make sure he doesn’t seem sick after switching though? Some can get allergies if the wood is extra dusty or an unsafe type, you’ll know if he starts sneezing but not showing other signs of illness. Good luck bunfriend!

@magpie it’s the second day of using them and he seems fine. I think I can stop being paranoid now with that and thanks to everyone’s advice here :3
Yeah, he hasn’t been sneezing or having breathing problems. Seems as active as usual too. I’m gonna keep an eye on his eyes as well to make sure they don’t seem leaky or anything that might be a reaction.

Good info about allergies vs other signs of illness. Thank you bunfriend :3
