Hello all! Nothing too serious here, just really curious about my bun.

So, after some digging, I learned about how himalayan/californian rabbits get their color. My girl is a netherland dwarf with that fur pattern, a little over a year old now. When I first got her last fall, her ears and paws were gray, and slowly darkened when winter came. BUT, as it got hotter for summer, she turned almost completely white! So far, she hasn’t darkened again one bit. I was wondering if her ears and whatnot would turn black again with winter, or if her fur is going to stay that way from now on.

For context, I’m in Hawaii (so it won’t get tooo cold here, haha) Images attached! One of them is a little unflattering but it’s the best one I have for comparison ?

Welcome to BB! I inserted your images for you. After attaching the images to your post, you need to click on “Insert Image” once they appear in your attachment list. An non-intuitive step, I know. Thank you for providing clear pictures!

I find myself amazed that these are the same rabbit. Such a drastic change! I have no experience with this sort of fur color change, but other BB members are sure to chime in with their experiences and knowledge.

Asriel had the reverse problem! When we brought him home he was mostly white. He’s a broken black tort Holland Lop, so he naturally had a broken black tort pattern. But when we first had him he was 8 weeks old and primarily white with a little bit of light brown on his back and nose and a teeny bit of gray on the sides. Now he has darkened so much. His whole mouth and nose area is a beautiful dark brown and the majority of his back is the same dark brown with gray mixed in. The only part that’s really white now is his chest/under belly he hasn’t lightened though, just keeps getting darker.

It’s possible she will Darken again. Magpie’s noseand ears will be super dark, then before she molts again they’re almost white! They always darken again

The Himalayan gene is temperature sensitive. Cold temps trigger the production of melanin. If you lived in the snow-clad Himalayas, it would be practical to have dark fur on the peripheral parts of your body (=furthest from the heart) where circulation is the weakest during cold spells – at the same time as the white fur on the major parts of the body disguises you from predators. It’s a beautiful example of epigenetics.

The changes in fur color between seasons will be less marked in indoors buns, but they are, as far as I know, always noticeable.

We would love updates on this!

Wow!!! That’s a drastic change! Like 2 beautiful bunnies in one!

My Bridge bun Sterling, whom I suspect was Flemish/Cali was completely white in the summer and then in the winter would get grey patches above his nose. I was so baffled at first!
