My 1 year old mini lop seems to have gotten sick all of a sudden. He was acting totally normal this morning – eating hay, super excited about his kale, peeing, pooping, wanting lots of attention. We went to see my in-laws and when we came back about 5-6 hours later he was acting odd. Doesn’t look like he ate much hay and when he ate a carrot he seemed to cough after and then wanted nothing to do with any snacks which is VERY abnormal. He seems to be having some trouble breathing (his nose is going faster than normal) and is somewhat lethargic. His lungs sounds clear and he is pooping but I did notice he seems to be developing a runny nose. I am of course panicking and thinking the worst (he was diagnosed with a cutaneous cancer this year which we are still in the window of waiting to see if it spread). Any one have any other ideas or suggestions on what to do? My plan is to call the vet first thing in the morning but I’m hoping someone has seen these symptoms before. Thanks!!

Do you have a rabbit savvy vet near you? Or a emergency vet near you? This sounds like an emergency, especially with the breathing. Make sure to take his temp regularly and keep him warm and hydrated. Offer any and all treats like basil, strawberries and other of his favorites to see if that perks him up. You can also give baby gas drops 1ml every 1-2 hours.

Can you look around to see if he got into anything bad, like cords or fabrics that could cause a tummy ache? Did you introduce any new foods?
Do you have a stethoscope? See if you can listen to him tummy and gi tract to see if you can hear any noises. Of course, force feeding should be avoided because in rare cases there could be a blockage( that’s how my bun lost his life). You can also offer apple sauce to see if be eat it.

          Keep us updated!

I did also want to mention that since it’s a lop, mine gets points al the time and she will not eat with the tiniest of points and it send her into stasis so that could be a reason he won’t eat.

It could be an airway infection because he’s coughing and developing a runny nose The nose going extra fast can be a sign of any type of stress though. He obviously needs to see a vet, so it’s good you’re taking him in as soon as you can. You can do a “steam bath” by running up a steam in your bathroom and sit there with the rabbit for like 10 minutes if you think he has trouble breathing.

I remember his very unusual cancer diagnosis. This would of course be the primary worry. X-rays of the lungs will tell.

Thank you for the advice but sadly my poor sweet boy died in my arms this morning. The vet thinks it could have been the cancer or possibly liver torsion but likely either way there would have been nothing I could have done. I feel like I let him down and I am so beyond heartbroken. I loved him so much and feel so lost and empty ?

I’m so sorry you can always do a necropsy to see what the cause of death was.

I’m so very sorry, Sarah. You didn’t let him down. I had a dog that died of hemangiosarcoma. It’s an insidious disease. This could very well have been due to metastasis to the lungs, with the cough and the trouble breathing. You did all you could when you had the skin tumor removed. You cared so well for him, but I know how it always feels like we ought to have done more regardless.

I’m so very sorry. It’s hard not to feel guilty, even though, in truth, we know we did all we could.
