So Jameson, my little 3 month old, our of nowhere started to absolutely stink last night. I have smelled the skunky/oniony smell on his poop before but it’s NEVER been this strong. I know about the anal glands. I checked them last night, but there was no build up in them. He only let me check them. When I tried to clean them he would not let me go near them. My room reads of this smell now and it seems out of no where. Also out of nowhere he seems extra naughty. He keeps

I assume Jameson hasn’t been neutered yet, if he’s only 3 months old, right? I’m not exactly sure about the oniony smell, which to me is mainly associated with cecotropes/cecals, but the sudden surge in naughtiness/misbehavior definitely suggests that his hormones are beginning to kick in. Has he started spraying/marking objects yet?

Bunnies do territorial poops which are shiny and smell like onions. It will go away once hes neutered.

Dasher, I deleted your “empty” posts, I figured they were doubles?

Territorial poops do smell like onions, they are shiny (it’s the oily shine that carries the smell) and they are often bigger than normal poop. They often get deposited near the perimeter of a bun’s territory, or in high-value places like beds and sofas.

Neutering will help, although not to 100%. If you introduce another rabbit in the household, there can be more territorial poop for a shorter or longer period of time. Not quite as super-stinky as an intact bun’s poop though.

Yes, territorial poops smell like onion. A territorial or displeased rabbit may intentionally open their anal glands to let out some stink as well. Sort of like a skunk, but with rabbits the odor can be there with or without actual spraying.
