        Hi all,

I have a Holland Lop that is about 1 year and 3 months old. In the last couple of weeks, I have noticed that on the right and left side of her nose her fur has been a little matted. No discoloration of gunkiness, just matted. I will often clean it off and it will return. It seems to be a little worse on the right side (her right my left) of her nose and sometimes a little black speck gets stuck in her fur on that right side (I’m not sure if it’s a little cecal or what). She has been perfectly normal otherwise as far as energy and playfulness and eating and pooping habits.

Today it was matted on both sides of her nose and under her nose right on the little split where her mouth starts. There was also some clear liquid there when I put my hand on the bottom part of her nose. I’ve read about snuffles and it makes me a little nervous but from what I’ve read snuffles sounds like it manifests way worse. Any idea what is going on and how serious it is?

Hi, my lop used to have constant nose discharge. I now think it was from her horrible ear infections that we are clearing up. Can you take her to a rabbit savvy vet to get checked out and tell them what you see? Have you checked her paws to see if it colored? The vet will check her teeth, ears to start off. The runny nose can be from pasturella, EC and a lot of other infections. She also should see the vet since they are obligate nasal breathers
, if it it gets gunky, it will be harder for her to breathe, and of course, to clear up the infection with medication or other treatment.

Her paws have been perfectly clean with no matting, she is very diligent in cleaning, however, so she might clean them before I can notice.

Unfortunately, I live in a small town and there’s only one vet that does rabbits and he doesn’t seem to be super “attentive”. I’ve often had to point out things that he should have noticed and he doesn’t always seem to know what he’s talking about so I don’t super trust him to treat it correctly. Does anyone know what the various treatments should be?

We are trying a different hay that has less dust because I’ve noticed this batch of hay has a lot of dust and I’m wondering if that might be causing irritation. If that doesn’t clear up by next week, I plan to take her in.

That’s disappointing. Exotic vets aren’t too common yet. Is there one an hour or so away? You Should have an emergency exotic vet on hand Incase she gets sick and needs exotic care immediately.

Has she been sneezing? Have you smelt her nose to see if the discharge smells? What hay do you have her on? I know the big boxes I get have a lot of dust in it and it makes me break out but my buns don’t react.

There’s some things you can try, switch to different hay, see if anything in your house that changed that might be making her nose wet. The other treatment would be medincine that’s only by doctors. There’s also a possibility that she is having molar issues or her roots are growing into her nasal cavities and causing the discharge.

It is disappointing! There is a vet an hour away but nothing 24 hour which is a little scary!

Normally we have her on Kaytee timothy hay but we were running low and the only kind I could find in town was Dumor timothy hay. I think when we switched the hay is about the time that her nose has gotten runny. It’s also about the same time we turned on the heat in our house so I’m not sure it that would play into it. We have worked to shake the hay of excess dust the last two days and today her nose was MUCH better so I’m hoping that’s all it was!

I always go for small pet select or oxbow because it’s almost never dusty but it is expensive. Have you changed the air filters in your house? It might help take more allergens out of the air. You can also get a air cleaner machine for where she is so that can also help. I know I’m highly allergic to my buns Hays so I go for dust free hay!

One of my buns (also a Holland lop) has had a mild runny nose his entire life. Here’s a pic:

That’s about the worst I’ve seen it, and usually his nose is much drier. I asked his (rabbit-savvy) vet once, and she wasn’t worried because that was literally his only symptom. Apparently even bunnies can have allergies, so he might be allergic to his hay or something else.

The vet said that whatever the cause, there was no reason to treat it unless he seemed bothered by it or developed other symptoms (frequent sneezing, thicker/colored discharge, noisy breathing, etc). It’s not a bad idea to get your bunny checked out by a vet just in case, but if the wet/matted nose is her only symptom, I wouldn’t worry too much I think you’re right that if it were something serious like snuffles, it would be worse than just a little wet nose.
