Hey folks!
This Sunday I’m picking up a one year old Checkered Giant named Gizmo (Flemish Giant, French Lop, and Spotted Rabbit seem to be the agreed upon breed origins). I am super excited as he’s very sweet and I’ve been feeling super lonely in my dorm since I lost my Californian rabbit, Bonnie. Beyond that excitement though, I’ve realized that Gizmo is twice the size of Bonnie and will likely get a little bigger! Currently he’s 12 pounds and projected to be between 13 and 15 by the time he’s done growing. I know that I have to change his food ratio, he’s going to need the litter box cleaned more, and he needs more playpen space (I upped it from 4×4 attached to a 3×2 cage to a 6×4 attached to a 3×2 cage as well as out of cage time in a 10×17 bunny proofed room), but I don’t really know much about the giant breeds. I did some research of course before I decided on him, but if anyone has any advice or experience with a big bunny, I’d love to hear it!
On a slightly different note, I’m reusing some of my old bunny equipment that I think is still suitable for Gizmo. Is there anything that he needs absolutely brand new? I have a bigger harness, a new litter box, I’ve washed all the fleece blankets twice, and I scrubbed the old cage. I don’t know exactly how sensitive their noses are and if he’ll react poorly to the faint smell of another rabbit. He currently lives with ten others at a rabbit sanctuary so he’s used to other rabbits, but he has his own space.
Thanks! You guys helped me so much with Bonnie and I’m excited to bring Gizmo into my life with the support of this community.
