Hello everyone. Today I woke up to my rabbit having a bloody blob coming out of her private part. I was mortified so quickly got her to a vet. The vet at first said it didn’t look good but upon closer examination pulled out the dead fetus (so gross). We did an X-ray to make sure she was no longer having babies. She got an antibiotic injection and cyanocobalamin injected. I was sent home with ditrim & liqui-tunic. She is now drinking and eating normally but is there anything else I can do to help her? He did tell me she would be gasy should I give her baby gass drops too? Or is that too much with everything she is taking? Like I said she is eating and drinking normally. Her poop is also normal. I’ve never posted on here but have always been a silent watcher. I’ve learned so much about bunnies thanks to you folks.

Oh that would have been a shock. It sounds like the vet has given her some things to help restore the body, and rabbit safe antibiotic to ward of infection. Do you know what the injected antibiotic was?

It’s good to hear she’s behaving normally. The vet may have mentioned gas because of antibiotic. You could give a probiotic like benebac if you wanted. Some well rabbit known rabbit vets suggest this and say it would do no harm. Gas drops wouldn’t do harm either. I’d only give if I saw her looking uncomfortable.

Make sure she’s not around an intact male. Rabbits can breed immediately after giving birth and are receptive at that time. So back-to-back pregnancies do happen and it would be taxing on the nuns body.

I don’t recall the name. While I was there I quickly googled it,it ended in “illin” but was not the dangerous kind. I know one is known to harm rabbits as I’ve read it on here before. I was in such shock I don’t remember much other than crying and hoping I’d be able to bring my chubby home. I love her so much. She is resting but whenever I go over to feed her she eats whatever I bring. I will keep her away from other rabbits and will get the gas drops just to have them handy. She will be going back for a checkup on Saturday. I’m hoping she gets well soon. It is such a relief to have to have other people to tell this too. I feel very alone in this. To many it’s just a “rabbit”.

Many antibiotics are safe when they are given as injections but harmful if they’re given orally. Penicillin and amoxicillin and bicillin are considered safe given as injections. http://www.medirabbit.com/Safe_medication/Antibiotics/Safe_antibiotics.htm Ditrim seems to be another bunny-safe antibiotic (sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim if you are located in Bangladesh or Finland). The liqui tinic are vitamins and iron to help compensate for blood loss.

It’s really great and very encouraging that she’s eating! Gas drops (simethicone) is not absorbed by the body so it can be given with other meds. Like Jersey says, its good to have at home if she should show symptoms of discomfort. A common brand of probiotics that many of our members use is Benebac, but you of course have to go by what’s available where you are located. Its aim is to replenish the gut with good bacteria because antibiotics kill off both bad bacteria and some of the good ones.

She loves to eat.. hence the name chubby. I stayed up to give her her medication and monitored her all through out the night. I’m gonna keep her inside for now to rest. Benebac is available here I live in California,USA. Should I give that to her after her medication? I will go buy that tomorrow after work. I’m also gonna get her some toys. I’m just so happy to have her home. I thought I would lose her.

I added the word “miscarriage” to the thread title, just to clarify, since the word abortion can mean a purposely interrupted pregnancy.

You can start giving Benebac right away, but it’s recommended that you dont give it at the same exact time as you give antibiotics. Give it 2-3 hours before or after you give the antibiotics. You can go on giving it for some time after the course of antibiotics is finished. This must have been a very scary experience for you, but her hearty appetite and good poop really are great signs.

Her pee the is a bit orange sometimes. Could that be because of the antibiotic?

Yes, antibiotics (and some other meds) are a well known cause of orange pee. But orange pee is not a sign of anything bad in a rabbit. They can get orange pee from plant pigments in food, for example dandelions. Some buns also get orange pee for “no reason” for example after the first cold spell in the fall. It’s normal for rabbits.
