If you do not know hurricane Michael is going to hit the panhandle where I live. I live in a flood zone and have been told over Amber alerts that I have to evacuate. I dont know how to prepare for a hurricane with a rabbit and I really need advice. The hurricane is coming in less than 2 days. I wanted to know if evacuation shelters allow rabbits and how to care for him at a shelter. I have a cage for him and extra hay and pellets packed. I also have water for him and I want to know what else I have to do to prepare.

I’m so sorry you’re in the path of the hurricane and so glad you’re going to evacuate!

I don’t know if shelters allow rabbits — I would call the one(s) you’re planning to go to. I would hope they would allow all pets. But you’d want to keep him away from dogs as much as possible.

I had to evacuate my apartment for about 10 days once and stay in a hotel with my two bunnies, and it wasn’t as bad as I feared. In addition to what you mentioned, I would bring: litterboxes, litter, greens, and a salad spinner or something to wash the greens in (you can use the bathroom sink for the water). If you bring any familiar toys or a blanket or towel, anything that smells familiar, that will help too. An exercise pen would be nice for him but probably not practical in your situation, and he should be OK without it for a short time.

Best of luck and I hope the storm passes over gently!!

Most florida shelters DO NOT allow pets. You’d have to google your county shelters to see which are pet friendly. I’m in Polk County, inland, and if you need someplace to evac to, you’re welcome to shelter here. Our place is small, but secure. We have PLENTY of hay and pellets. We can block off the kitchen so your bun can have room to roam.

That’s so nice of you, Bladesmith! That sounds ideal!!

It’s too bad most Florida shelters aren’t pet-friendly — what are people with pets supposed to do??

Anyhow thank you for your kind offer for Rainbowbunnies.

Sadly, I don’t think I saw the thread in time to get the message to them.  I hope they’re ok.  For the record though, the offer is open to anyone who needs it, for any reason.

                  That’s awesome, Bladesmith.

I wasn’t aware of this storm until after I saw it had passed through. It really hit hard. Rainbowbunnies, I hope you were able to get out.

I also just heard about this…(from the news apparently it came as a surprise to the residents too, as it was upgraded from a tropical storm to a massive hurricane just a couple days before landfall).

I hope the OP and others were able to get out and find shelter
