We have a new pet bunny (a rescue) and he has fleas.  Tried to weigh him and I think he weighs 4.8 lbs (weighed him while he was in carrier & without).  Am not sure how accurate that was since it was a bathroom scale so was only going to give him 1/2 dose of Advantage since it’s for cats 5-9lbs.  The whole tube emptied on just a tiny squeeze.  Should I worry?  I put it on the back of his neck per instructions but when his ears lay flat it gets some of the med on his ears, then he wipes his ears with his paws and then he licks his paws.  Am worried now that he’s poisoning himself.  I tried to wipe some off.  Should I be worried?

Unfortunately I do not have experience in this.

At the minimum, I would monitor the site closely and make note if your rabbit begins acting oddly. I’ve read some rabbits can be more sensitive than others. If you have a rabbit vet you can call, it would help to consult.

Hopefully other members can chime in with their experiences!

In general, topical medications are considered safe with the understanding that a rabbit will eat some of it, since they are such avid groomers. So that makes me initially not as concerned about ingestion.

If it was the 5-9lb cat formula, you should be fine.

If you start to notice any odd behaviour, or if you’re still concerned, by all means give your vet a ring to double check

I did some research on Advantage before applying it to Dawn (I found a flea on her when grooming her and went for the nuclear option immediately, because DIE FLEAS!!!!), and from what I read, Advantage isn’t toxic to rabbits. One thing I read was that if they ingest it (Like if you put it where the rabbit can lick it), it may upset their stomach. What I did, since Dawn is only 2.5 lbs, is I dosed the cat first with a “small cat” tube (And yes, that stuff comes out QUICK) and then cut the tube open and sure enough, a few drops were left in the tube ,enough to put 2 drops on Dawn.

Since your bun is roughly 4.8 lbs, I’d say it falls into the margin of error for the “5 lbs.” limit.

As far as those tubes go, I understand why they make them deliver so much so fast, as anyone who has ever tried to administer to it to a recaltrient feline can attest, but I WISH they’d change the tube design. It’s hell getting it past their hair to their skin for proper application, and if it’s delivered mostly to their fur, it doesn’t work.

What I’m going to do in the future is cut the tubes open, suck up the liquid into a syringe, and apply it that way.

                  I think you’ll be ok!

My 4lb holland had that dose by a vet. Also watch where you applied it, Magpie’s neck basically burned where the vet applied it, so it really irritated her.
