Well it’s the weekend and the vet is closed till Monday. My rascally rabbit has snuffles and seems to have some labored breathing. What can I do for her till Monday? She is 2.5 years old and survived Hurricane Harvey and a year living really rough in a gutted house with us only to get what I fear is pneumonia now. Any advice is welcome. There is no veterinary hospital close to us that helps rabbits and that is open before Monday.

Is the labored breathing coming more from the chest or is it nasal blockage? If there’s a lot of snot build up around the nose causing it, you can -very gently- use a q tip to get some snot out.

Did you already get a diagnosis of snuffles and have been medicating and it has worsened, or are you suspecting it’s snuffles based on symptoms?

No diagnosis yet, just afraid from what I’ve read. There is nothing around her nose. She has been treated for a runny eye that is mysterious to the vet. Been runny since December with no discernible cause. It’s not her teeth and she was given antibiotics with no effect. It doesn’t generally bother her but she does try to clear her nose frequently so the vet suspects a blocked duct from eye to nose. The labored breathing is brand new and alarming. She also feels lighter in weight though I don’t have a way to weigh her. She’s eating, but not as much. My alarm is that I’ve read that pneumonia can develop vary quickly. So I’m frightened.

What was done to rule out teeth? I ask because many vets make judgments by just looking at them and asking about eating habits, but this method can miss a lot of dental-related issues. A blocked nose and eye duct sounds like an overgrown root issue to me, which is discernable only through x-rays I believe.

Going into labored breathing is concerning, as it’s a new symptom. Is she cool (not too hot), or has the weather been warmer lately that may be making her run too hot?

I would be very concerned about laboured breathing and would be looking to find an after hours vet if at all possible. Is she still breathing through her nose? Or is she breathing with an open mouth or with her head tilted back? If breathing through the mouth or with her head tilted back definitely do all that you can to find a vet that will see her as soon as possible as I would consider that an emergency situation.

I do hope that she is ok. I’m inclined to think along the lines of Wick regarding the tooth issues. Unless x-rays were done to rule out overgrowth of the tooth root it could still be dental related.

Good news this morning. I found a homeopathic product for respiratory relief specified for cats. I looked up the ingredients to make sure that they were safe for buns and then gave a few drops to my sweet one. It seems to have offered quite a bit of ease to her to help get to Monday morning when the vet opens up. The product is HomeoPet feline nose relief.

As for the dental advice, thank you for that information! I will definitely ask that we pursue that as the issue is, and has always been, in only one eye. Sounds like my bun needs wisdom tooth extraction……

She is still breathing through her nose and never appeared to be mouth breathing. She was wheezing quite a bit yesterday but the HomeoPet product seems to have truly reduced the wheezing. She continues to try to clear the nose on the weepy eye side. But that has been a continued problem I hope can be resolved soon.
