So, I have recently bought 10 pounds of second cut timothy hay (small pet select) It smells good, looks good, but it’s rather soft and I’m concerned it’s not going to be enough fiber for my dear bun. She eats it just fine, and her poos are normal. Is this okay? Maybe I should mix it with a harder kind?

It’s probably has more leaf and less stem, that’s all. The fibre will still be there for digestion. I’d be more worried about tooth wear, but I know plenty of people feed the softer cuts of timothy hay without problem. It’s still long strand hay that has to be ground down. If you want to mix it in with a harder variety that would be fine too, but I don’t think you would need to.

I do feel concerned about tooth wear, because she doesn’t chew on anything else. Thanks for your info.. I might just mix in some harder kind.

I wouldn’t worry too much about the softness for tooth wear. While there is some more fiber in stems, the tooth wearing quality of hay comes from the grass leaves themselves.

Here’s an interesting blog about this with cool microscopic pictures of grass! http://www.therabbithouse.com/blog/2011/10/07/grass-hay-tooth-wear/

Lots of folks with picky buns, like me, feed 3rd cut Timmothy which is SUPER soft. But Thor’s teeth have actually been much better since we switched because she eats so much more of the soft hay. Spoiled bun bun

SPS’s 2nd cut is their best seller for a reason. It’s what most buns seem to love and what keeps my little guy’s teeth gooorgeous (since he rarely if ever chews on designated chewing aids lol).
