So upset with myself, we found a tiny chewed piece left from a rubber bracelet. This is obviously really bad and we are just sick. I guess we wait to see, but I can’t imagine that can pass? Would you take him to the emergency vet tomorrow regardless? Ugh!! We are so diligent in checking the space, I don’t know how it happened.

Hi there! Is he popping and eating? How is he acting? I’d wait a bit to see if he passes it. However, I don’t know much about the toxicity of rubber on bunnies, but I’m sure somebody more experienced will help <3

Thanks for the response. He’s currently eating and pooping away, but it’s only been about an hour or two since he ate the object.

Ironically, it was an animal rescue rubber bracelet. I did some quick research and it doesn’t sound like it means guaranteed death (which I had convinced myself it did) and I also just found our regular vet has hours on Saturday. I’ll call tomorrow even if he’s still doing ok, which I’m desperately hoping.

My bunny Yohio ate half of a rubber cat toy once. Hopefully your bunny will be as fine as he was. I’d call the vet to be safe, meanwhile give hay (even encourage hay eating by hand feeding) and wet greens to help things pass through. He’s probably chewed the bracelet very well so the main issue would be toxic colorants etc. Rabbits rather routinely eat the rubber buttons off of remote controls and nothing bad happens (except to the remote obviously).

Thanks!! I’m hoping he did chew it well. I have heard of rabbits eating remote buttons and surviving, I forgot about that. He is still acting normal this morning (so about 9 hours after the incident) eating hay, drinking, and pooping. He shows no worry and no remorse haha? I’m calling the vet in a few, but I’m guessing it will be the wait and see situation. Ugh!

I called the vet and she said it was my choice whether to bring him in now and see if they see anything or wait until a problem arises (if one does).

We ended up deciding to wait and I got the name and number of the emergency vet. I decided to wait because even if nothing was seen now, it could still be building up and a problem could occur anyway. He also hates going places and I didn’t want to compound with any possibly unneeded stress.

We obviously are always watching their poops and eating habits, but I’m wondering how much longer I need to be so hyper vigilant? Any guesses on how long an obstruction can take to develop?

It would be from case to case. I’d be hyper-vigilant for a week. Brush the bunny so there’s as little ingestion of hair as possible. Keep making sure he stays hydrated.

The brushing tip is a good idea. I’ll do that.

So far so good. Still eating, pooping, peeing and playing as normal. He’s a more anxious bunny so for a while I was worried because he was hiding for more of the day (maybe) than usual, but I was checking on him, bugging and picking him up more than normal. My husband went to play with him and he popped out like normal. I was just scaring him haha.

I kept reading being young (7 months) is on his side because they tend to be better hay eaters which pushes it through. Trying to stay hopeful that it’s working it way out. I also gave less pellets and fresh hay frequently to encourage him to eat that.

Good! Some bun owners have reported finding residue of the ingested object in their bun’s poop, although that would be mostly likely with a strongly colored foreign object. And it would be really really tiny pieces that you’d have to break up the poop to see. Buns can’t swallow bigger objects whole like dogs can- which is very good, of course, since they are rather prone to ingest non-food items.

Thanks for checking in. Bunny is still acting normal- whew! I do a good clean of poops each night so I can monitor new ones the next day and they still look normal. I have looked for any green bracelet pieces, but haven’t seen anything. I’m hoping it’s because they were so chewed up and their poop has a slightly green hue maybe anyway?

He’s still eating hay, drinking water and I just started giving him his normal amount of pellets again which he was very happy to have. He is running and playing as normal so far! I still am not feeling out of the woods so we’re keeping a close watch for the next several days.

Glad to hear that! I’ve had a few scares like that over the years….
