Hi everyone! I am a new rabbit owner! I just recently adopted two lion heads (Bo and Ichiban). I’ve noticed that Bo’s ears look different! The tip of his ears looks like they’ve been nipped off a little bit. I’ve noticed no blood no skin, just less hair than before. Are they just shedding?? Or what can I do?? And is it normal for them to be itching their heads every now and then? It’s not excessive. They both eat lots of hay and drink water like normal as well.

It could be shedding, however if you have noticed them itching their heads quite often then they could have mites. Of course it’s normal for rabbits to scratch at their head and ears for grooming, but it’s not a frequent thing. Mites can’t be seen with the naked eye but the common signs are hair loss, itching, and dry/flaky skin. If you think they could have mites it would be worth taking them to a vet to double check and they can provide treatment for both, since they’re highly contagious.

            How do rabbits get mites?

If there are mites, they would probably have had them since you adopted them. They can be passed from rabbit to rabbit, from other animals or even from hay.
