Hi! Yesterday I got a new bunny as a friend for mine. I didn’t let them toghether yet, I want to let him get used to the new enviroment first. I got him from a breeder. On the internet everything looked ok but when I saw the bunnies in person, it was pretty sad. They were kept toghether in small wood hutches outside. I don’t think they are cleaning those hutches very often. The bunny looks healthy, he’s cute and very friendly (I was pretty surprised that he is not scared of me) but he has a really bad pee smell. Not just his paws or bottom, even the head has that smell. How can I get rid of that smell?

PS: In my country there are shelters only for dogs, there is no place I can adopt a bunny from. The only options were petshops and breeders.

A few days in a clean environment will fix everything. Bunnies are excellent self-groomers and love a clean home, so he’ll clean himself. You could try “petting” him with a slightly warm damp cloth, if you’re really impatient, but otherwise, just give him a bit of time

It’s good you’re letting the new rabbit settle before beginning to bond. If you haven’t already, I highly suggest reading the bonding section in the BUNNY INFO portion of this website. Rabbits cannot be just put together and bonded after a few days. It’s a long process, so best to read up!

I will wait for him to clean himself. He is not litter trained yet so he pees everywhere but I will try to clean his living space as often as I can so he won’t sit in his own pee. Thank you!

I have read as much as I could before getting him and I am still reading. I want to do my best and to be well informed so they will be successfully bonded.

You didn’t mention if the new bunny was neutered or not. It seems like breeders would not be spaying and neutering their rabbits, so I imagine that he isn’t neutered. I also wondered if your first rabbit has been spayed or neutered. That is always the first step in bonding. Some people think that it’s fine to put rabbits of the same gender together, even if they haven’t been spayed or neutered, since there is no risk of litters. But that is not the case. Once rabbits reach puberty, around 3 months of age, they have to be kept separated until they are spayed or neutered, and have gone through bonding procedures. Otherwise you will have fighting and injuries. Plus, there is always the possibility that a rabbit has been misidentified as to gender. It’s not rare for that to happen, then for surprise litters to be born.

My first bunny is spayed. The new bunny isn’t neutered yet, he is still too young. I’m sure he is a male, after the breeder checked I checked him too and he looks like a male. I never had a male before so I don’t know if there is any specific smell for them, but his fur has that smell of pee. After 2 days in a clean enviroment the smell got better, but isn’t gone yet.
