Hi, I have a lionlop who is absolutely hard to pick up. Even picking her up with all the suggested ways to pick up a rabbit, she will still try to kick as hard as she can and struggle so badly. I rarely ever pick her up but as she’s getting older, I do need to groom her and trim her nails so I’d like to at least pick her up without getting tons of scratches. I also just want to be able to pick her up in case of emergencies but with the fact she struggles like no other, I can’t do it.

My other rabbit is so much easier and tolerates it but won’t put up a fight.

Does anyone have any sort of advice. And yes I do know rabbits don’t like being handled but I’m not wanting to pick her up for cuddles. I just need to carry her so that I can place her in her pen if needed to, grooming, etc.

My lionhead is exactly the same way. I have trained him to go into his carrier and pick him up that way. Does the job.

My girl is the same way. Wish I had some tips for you, I’d use them myself! It’s very difficult trying to pick up 9 lbs of flailing, kicking bunny.

Picking up a difficult rabbit can be, well, difficult A great suggestion already made is to train/lure your bunny to go into a carrier or basket so that you can pick up the carrier and take them to where they need to be. The only problem with that of course is that you still have to be able to pick them up to handle them at the other end for the nail trim etc.

My previous rabbit Bandit was initially a real fighter when it came to being picked up. I had to slowly train him to accept it. I used his pellets as training treats and started out simply by petting him, giving a treat, then walking away. Once he was fine with that I moved onto petting over and down the top of his bottom towards his tail, and treating him for that if he didn’t run away. I did the same thing with slowly starting to pet him around his front legs/under his chest/belly. If she stayed put he’d great treats and then I’d leave him be. Each time I practiced this I started with the first step, just petting, then petting over his back, then under his chest, before moving onto the next step etc. After that I would pet around his front legs and lift his front legs 1-2cm off the ground and straight away put him back down and give treats. Repeating this over and over until I could lift his front off the ground and hold for about 5 seconds before letting him down. After that I combined it with lifting his bottom as well, just a couple cm off the ground for a moment before putting him right back down.

In any case, I think you get the idea, lots of baby steps for training him to accept being picked up. I can’t remember how long it took. I think I did about 3 training sessions a day, sometimes repeating what I was doing twice each time. And perhaps within a week, maybe 2, he accepted being picked up and carried to where I needed to take him. For me, the easiest pick up method is this one shown in the video I’ll link, I’ve linked it to the time with the pick up method that I used with Bandit, the tilting of his body to transfer his weight onto my arm really helped with him. https://youtu.be/tIXdvtNwAPk?t=266
The whole video is worth a watch if you haven’t seen it
