Hello all! This is my first post here so I apologize if I’m doing this wrong. I have a pretty old bun named Henry (he’s over 13!) who has had some type of chronic illness for the last 3-ish years of his life. I’ve taken him to a handful of different vets who have suggested different treatment options and have I tried basically all of them over the years. They all seem to agree it is some type of upper respiratory infection but culturing has turned up negative and Henry eats, drinks, poops, and plays pretty normally. I’ve tried long term antibiotics, nebulized him for a while, steam treatments, etc but he still gets hardcore sneezing fits and is very wheezy all of the time.

At this point, especially now that his age is starting to show in his overall energy levels I am beginning to feel very guilty that I haven’t been able to help my bunny over these last years. Whenever he sneezes it jerks his body around and is really hard for me to watch. Have any of you dealt with a pet who has had a chronic illness? I am just looking for some advice with how you’ve dealt with it, I know everyone feels like their pets are part of their families and I am just really struggling at the moment.

3 years is no comparison to 5 months, but there was a time period where I felt quite hopeless in treating Wick’s upper respiratory infection. What usually only took one to two courses of antibiotics for other rabbits took Wick 5 months. He’s a runt, and historically has shown his body is a bit weaker than others.

Have medical assessments not related to a URI been done? 13 years is a wonderful life and due to age, he could have an immune system that’s weakened, or there may be something else going on, making him use his resources elsewhere than fighting off the infection. Have you had blood work done?

I mention this because we had a user whose rabbit was taken over by a skin issue and it would not be cured. Only after the rabbit passed did the owner realize the rabbit had a tumor growing on the liver, constantly straining the systems.

I agree, it may not be a URI. Wooly, for example, has tooth root issues. He has been living with chronic sinus issues for years. He sneezes and has a lot of “snot”. Does Henry have any other symptoms? Eye discharge? Head tilt? Facial paralysis?
