Hi I have a rabbit who stopped eating and drinking, we took her emergency vet and they administered gut stasis drugs and Metacam. Still no better next day so checked her in for X-ray (which showed gas, no blockage) and top up of the drugs and started her on an I.v. She spent a whole day with the nurse being liquid fed, iv drip and meds and then we bought her home, managed to get her eating a few herbs and a carrot. We get her up and run her around and when she flops give her a hot water bottle. We’re now on day 5 of treatment and still no poo, is this normal as the gut needs to fill first or should we be worried now? She’s still getting all the drugs daily and I’m feeding her as much as she’ll take but I’m worried that there’s still no release at the back end. She has a swollen belly still which I massage, and I’m giving her gripe drops and pineapple juice so i don’t think anyone will have any new suggestions. What I’m really looking for is confirmation that other people have been through this and no poo 5 days on is ok and just to persevere with the treatment. It seems unlikely she has a blockage as we looked at the X-ray with the vet and could only see gas and scattered small poo. Any thoughts appreciated thanks as to when to take her back to the vet or try something different

This seems like a very serious issue. Did you take her to a rabbit savvy vet? It can really change how they treat them. Are you force feeding? Are you doing baby gas drops, subq fluids at home every couple of hours?

Depending on what the rabbit has eaten, food will take anywhere from 5 to 20 hours to pass through the digestive tract. So yes, 5 days with no poop is an emergency situation. I would stop force feeding for now and get her back to the vet right away. Force feeding makes sense when the stomach is empty as it helps the digestive tract to start working again. In this case, after 5 days of force feeding and no poop, her stomach must be filled to the brim. Forcing more food down her throat won’t do any good at this point, it will only cause her pain and could actually cause her stomach to rupture (be careful with the tummy massages). Get her back to the vet and have them do another x-ray to see where the food is/if it’s moving through the digestive tract at all.

I also want to echo what Bunny House said. Is your vet bunny savvy? It might be a good idea to get a second opinion from a rabbit savvy vet. This is definitely an emergency. And yes, baby gas drops can help a lot.

No poo after 5 days of treatment is definitely an emergency, considering that a normal bunny would poo at least a hundred poos daily.

I agree on taking her back to a bunny savvy vet asap. From what I know, emergency vets are able to administer the basic meds but are often not knowledgeable when it comes to treating a bunny, so it’s best to get her to a proper bunny savvy vet.
