Bunnies are in separate cages and in the last 5 days I caught each of them drinking their pee one time. The male missed his litter box and was drinking it off the floor of his large cage. The female peed on the carpet during her out of cage time and was licking it. Besides being gross, why are they suddenly doing this?? They are each rotated to allow out of their cages access (still free access to 2-story cages) at least 5 hours a day. They have fresh bowls of water daily, tons of hay and 1/4 cup of pellets and fresh veggies. So why drink pee?! Yuck.

I don’t think anybody really knows why some bunnies drink their urine sometimes. Some do it often. It is gross to a human of course, but it’s not otherwise considered a problem or a sign that something is wrong with the rabbit.

Oh good, thanks for the note. My short research online kept saying neglected rabbits or those without accesss to fresh water would be more likely to drink urine. Mine always have fresh water, food and attention. It’s good to hear that some just do it.

Since you give them separate time out, Im assuming they’re intact and cannot be together? In that case, I wonder if it the hormones in pee they’re attracted too?
