I looked away for like half a minute to see a magnet, the thin flexible kind, had fallen into my buns pen. In that short period of time he ate a chunk of it, about 3/4 inch big. Do you think he will be okay and what should I do? I just gave him fresh hay which he is eating.

There’s nothing much you can do except to keep a very close eye and make sure he’s eating lots of hay/drinking lots of water. If all is good the magnet should pass through. You can also look out for any traces of it in his poops.

If he stops pooping or shows any signs of discomfort, bring him to a vet immediately.

I’m inclined to say go to a vet immediately. That chunk of magnet is now a bunch of little magnets which might try to come together even though there are organs in between the pieces. If the magnets pull hard enough they can cause internal bleeding.

I know this isn’t what you wanted to hear but I think it’s a real enough possibility to consider it.

Hmm H&T, can a bunny’s digestive system actually break down a magnet into chunks? Genuinely curious because I’d imagine it to come out as a whole piece if it does manage to pass through.

Rabbits as a rule chew what they eat very well. That would make the bits of magnet very small. I’d call a vet and ask. They might have experience with this sort of thing. Try to make bun eat hay.

We’d be very grateful for updates.

I’m hoping your bun is doing okay. I would def go to a vet in this situation because of the same thing H&T mentioned. I know magnets are very dangerous for children for that reason.

Just wanted to update everyone—thanks so much for all the help and suggestions. I fed a lot of hay, water and Sherwood digestive supplements. I have not seen anything pass through that resembles a magnet, his poops just look same as always. He is eating good and acting normal.

I am going to call the vet and keep a close monitoring on the situation. Last time he went to the vet he developed gi stasis, that’s why I am hesitant to take him in unless it’s needed for sure.

I do want to add the particular magnet in question was very weak—one of those paper adhesive kind you get free with stuff. So it barely magnetizes and he only ate a small piece, still I worry.

Does anyone know for how long the magnetization/internal bleeding possibility can be an issue for? Just trying to figure out when I will know I’m in the clear. Thanks!
