I have a seven month old male bunny. He used to be able to stay near everyone one so he wasn’t lonely, but due to allergies in members of the family, he will have to move to a more secluded area. Neutering him isn’t really an option, so he can’t be bonded with a female, but I don’t want him to be alone for a lot of the day since I can’t always be with him. I was wondering, would it be better to buy another buck and keep them in the same room but in different cages so he wouldn’t be lonely, or get two bonded females to keep in the same room but in a different cage from him. With a female he could never have contact since neither would be fixed, but with a buck he might could socialize with supervision for a few minutes… please help, I don’t want him to be lonely!

You can’t bond bunnies if they aren’t neutered/spayed. Unfixed bunnies only have the desire to fight and mate. So getting an unspayed female will obviously result in babies, and getting an unneutered male will result in a constant war. You can’t let unfixed bunnies have any play time or time together whatsoever. They must be kept completely separate at all times. Bunnies are either bonded or not. I would not suggest a bonded pair at all to be in the same room because it will disrupt the pair’s bond and you’ll be stuck with 3 completely separate bunnies.

What about getting a male, but keeping them in separate cages so he has company and isn’t all alone. I don’t know, this is the second bunny I’ve ever had, I just don’t want him to be all alone in the room since I can’t be in there with him all the time.…

Unfortunately bunnies can’t have play dates. So even if you got another male, you wouldn’t be able to let them play together unless you went through the full bonding process but bonding can’t really be done unless both rabbits are neutered. This is because their hormones make them unpredictable.

Is there a reason he can’t be neutered?

Neutering isn’t really an option because clinics where I live won’t nueter them. I’m pretty sure they will treat them though.

Ah okay. That’s tough. I know some bunnies can really feel comfort having a bun neighbour but I don’t know whether that’s when they’re neutered or not. You could always get a 2nd male and initially put him in another room to settle. Then you could swap scents a little and then move him to the same room as your current male. Essentially pre bonding so that they become accustomed to each other’s smell (but obviously not going any further than just swapping smells)

You’d have to be really careful that they can’t touch one another ever though.

Yeah, I just want to get someone to keep him company nearby. Swapping scents is swapping cages, right? Thanks for the help!!!
