Hi everyone, so I’m sat in my bed grooming Apollo and all of a sudden feel wet on his nose. I looked it over and he had a small clump of gooey, white liquid coming out of one nostril so I looked online and most websites pointed me towards snuffles which sounds very serious. I have also noticed he seems to be itching and grooming more than usual but I just put that down to his molting as a lot of his coat came out this week. I want to ring the vets but they’re closed and at the moment behaviour wise he seems okay aside from the two symptoms mentioned as he is eating and drinking fine, hopping around, not sneezing much (once or twice a day?) and he doesn’t have watery eyes or anything. I’m just quite worried this is the start of an illness as my other bunny has been sneezing a little bit too. I’m ringing the vets first thing tomorrow morning but just thought I’d ask for some advice, has anyone else’s rabbit experienced this?

It could be an upper respiratory infection. Wick (hopefully they’ll chime in) dealt with URI when Wick first went home. But sneezing and discharge isn’t always pasturella. Have you noticed if he’s been making a snoring sound? I’d wait for the vet’s opinion. But a URI, and I think pasturella too, are both treated with antibiotics. Sometimes it takes several rounds of antibiotics for the infection to go away or even multiple antibiotics.

One of my buns has pasturella that will flare up at times. My other one had it and it would lead to him having flare ups with the sniffles and then diarrhea.

A culture is the best bet to see what it is but the quick fix is to try a broad spectrum to see if it stops it.

Yes, a URI isn’t necessarily pasteurella. In fact, pasteurella is a common bacteria inside rabbit sinuses. It typically does not cause any problems or symptoms. But a few rabbits do experience symptoms like Bunny House’s bun and they will have flare ups (usually when something causes a dip in their immune system). So I wouldn’t worry about the horror stories you will read online. At least not yet, anyway. Have a vet take a look, they will probably prescribe some antibiotics. If it’s just a URI, there should be no issues with it clearing up with a broad spectrum antibiotic.
