I have a 5 year old lionhead that has been on quite a journey the last few months. Back in April she had her first teeth issues (back teeth growing points into her cheeks). Since then she has had multiple teeth trims. In late July she had a trim and a few days later had GI Stasis. It was scary and took up until about two weeks ago to fully recover from. Yesterday I noticed she was slowing down on eating her hay and I knew it wasn’t her teeth because they were trimmed less than two weeks ago. I gave her some gas drops hoping that would help and at the time it seemed to. Today she is once again not eating very much hay but is happily taking greens and critical care. About an hour ago she was hopping around me in the kitchen and I noticed an odor. I looked down and she seemed to be leaving little brown drops behind her. Outside of not eating hay her behavior seems fairly normal. There are no open vets in my area today due to Labor Day. Has anyone else experienced this?

That seems to be diarrhea and she should be seen. If it clears up in a day then you don’t need to take her but as she’s had some gi tract issues, it’s always a worry when it starts to not work right. My lion head would have those same liquids and he would be taken to the vet and put on metanitrozol and it would clear him up. It seems as her gi tract hasn’t been good, she should probably be on probiotics as her gut flora has been compensated. Make sure she is staying hydrated until you can get her to a vet as this can be considered an emergency. As any loose or runny stool is very bad for bunnies.

Don’t be surprised if she has bad teeth and needs a new dental. There were a few times my lop needed dentals weeks after the last because she has a bad bite.

It could be cecotropes juice. With the critical care in her system, a lot of times rabbits will overproduce cecos because there’s a lot of nutrients in critical care. How this correlates to juice, I do not know, but my instinct says cecotropes juice can occur from a temporary imbalance in nutrition intake.

Wick has had cecotropes juice droppings a few times, but it’s never chronic.

As suggested, I would recommend continuing to observe and if it continues, contact the vet.

Thanks! I’ll make sure she’s getting water. I’m honestly in panic mode and hate that I have to wait until the morning to contact her vet. Thanks for the reply!

It does have the odor of cecotropes. I’m nervous to keep giving her critical care but also don’t want to stop due to the lack of hay intake. I will be calling her vet first thing tomorrow.

If your rabbit is not eating, do not hesitate very much to give critical care. CC is meant for rabbits in recovery, and it’s essential for it, because it gives all the needed nutrients and keeps the gut moving. Excess cecotropes during that time period is not terrible.
