I’ve had several buns in the past but none of them cared much for climbing. Gilligan on the other hand will climb everything and anything. He LOVES it.

Now, he’s semi free roam so I’ve quickly learned that everything he can access in the living room is a comfortable height for him to get on and off. The problem lies with my stairs. He absolutely adores zooming up and down them, partially I think because I don’t want him to. It’s not that he’s not allowed upstairs, I shut all the room doors so he can roam the hall if he wants. My problem is I have open riser stairs and a banister with wide gaps in it and he sticks his head out enough to peer around and it gives me the fear. Since I lack experience with climbing bunnies I’m not sure how good they are at judging distance? I was wondering if anyone else has experience with buns that climb and if he’s likely to just jump despite it clearly being too far? I don’t want to stop him having a good run and nose about but I also don’t want him to hurt himself.

Thanks in advance for any advice on this!

Oooh, the open stairs would make me nervous, at least with my bunnies. They’re dummies and they fall off the couch all the time! I don’t think they’d actually try to jump from somewhere dangerous, but I can totally imagine them falling… Are the stairs slippery?

Ha, yeah it’s definitely nerve wracking to say the least. He’s not fallen off anything yet, he seems pretty stable and comfortable with climbing and he is quite a big boy tbh. He’d really have to squeeze himself through the gaps. The stairs are carpeted so he has good traction on them, my upstairs and downstairs are laminate flooring but he’s actually really good on it so far. I’ve never seen a bun with so much control on slippy flooring.

He’s off to get vaccinated etc next week so I’ll speak to the vet about it too. If I have to gate off the stairs I will. I tried barricading them from the front but the wee bigger just slipped through the back of the second step. He’s too bloody smart for his own good!

Oh, I’m glad the stairs are carpeted and that he doesn’t fit easily through the gaps! I can only go from my own experience, but I would be surprised if a bunny chose to jump from that height. Sometimes I put my bunnies on the table and they act as though the edges are walls!

Isn’t it funny how smart bunnies can be? Mine are so dumb in some ways (I can put a treat on the ground right in front of them and they don’t notice because they think it’s still in my hand!) but they’re always surprising me by the clever ways they get past my careful bunny proofing…haha!
