Has someone ever encountered such a situation? My four bunnies, 2 neuteured males and 2 females (1 spayed and the other is not) have suddenly started peeing black. Not dark brown or dark orange but pitch black like black pen ink! They seem fine and active, not lethargic at all… Can someone tell me what’s going on?

Do all of them have black urine? Or just one? There is a condition in people that causes their urine to turn black when exposed to the air. It has to do with certain amino acids and the inability to metabolize them properly. The condition is extremely rare and even rarer in animals. If all 4 bunnies have black urine, then it makes me think it is something they are eating. If you can’t pinpoint the source, then it would probably be a good idea to ask your vet.

I’m with LBJ10, if it’s all four bunnies I’d look at something they’re eating. Whether it’s a new food, or even something they may be chewing on in their enclosure (eg dye from a toy or fabric).

If it’s just the one bun, I’d be off to the vet quick smart as that is very alarming indeed.

              Very strange.
Are you seeing the pee right when they do it or finding puddles around the place? Is there are black soiled fur around the genitals?
New foods or new bedding/litter they are eating. Can they have gotten into some charcoal? I know, it doesn’t sound like something rabbits would want to eat… but I had a bunny that use to lick the fire poker so…

All four of them had black urine and no such stains on their bottom. I woke up the next morning to check on them and the pee color was back to normal (brownish yellow) for all of them… I let them out on the patio and sometimes some fresh maple tree leaves fall there. I’ve seen them munch on those a few times and there was no issue with the colour of the pee.

Yesterday, I put them on the patio again (they play in groups of two: Ashes with Dumbledore, Winter with Fluffy) and later in the afternoon I noticed that in Winter and Fluffy’s enclosure, there was black urine again although not as much as last time, which leads me to believe only one bunny was peeing black urine.

Is the pee normal looking when it comes out? I’m wondering if it is actually black or if it is reacting with the air.

I would take a sample of it to your vet and see what they find under the microscope
