Last night my boy Gus gave me a bit of a scare – I’ve never had any health problems with him so I’m not sure what it was?
He was in my room with me while I was working and I offered him a little snack as I often do (just bok choy) and he refused it. I tested a tiny amount pellets (his favourite thing in the world) and he refused that too, so I knew something was definitely wrong.
He ran to his pen and lay down on his blanket where he sleeps and flopped over (very unusual for him in cold weather – flops are rare) and then he kept sitting up, flopping, and stretching out on his stomach. At a friend’s suggestion I massaged his stomach for a fair while (just where I could reach from whatever position he flopped into). He looked like he was straining occasionally and he did pee himself a little at one point (looked like normal pee). And he was acting like I wasn’t there, just ignoring me completely.
I had the emergency vet number on my phone literally ready to call for advice then suddenly, about 45 min after this all started, he just ‘snapped’ back to normal. Started headbutting me, looking for food, hopping around the room like nothing had happened. He ate the bit of bok choy I had offered earlier, then after a few more minutes he went and pooped (small amount but normal sized) and about 20 minutes later he was back in my bedroom doing binkies.
It’s been 12 hours now and he seems perfectly fine, active, eating hay and up to normal mischief. Was this likely a blockage that passed? Or something else? Should I take him to a vet just to check up on things?
