        (Long Essay Ahead)

Some of you might remember that Kurotta had a bout of weight loss about 3 months ago. Symptoms were weakness in hind legs, inconsistent poop size, increased water/food intake, lethargy. Bloodwork done indicated a liver issue.

The vet suspected three things: EC, liver toxin (due to food etc.) or a congenital liver issue. Prescribed Fenbendazole and Samylin (a liver supplement). Kurotta improved shortly after, but we had difficulty getting his weight back up to 800g. He stabilised at about 630-650g for a month at least. Until yesterday.

I noticed he looked slightly leaner and decided to weigh him. He was 590g. He was 630g either last week or the week before. Have also been seeing slightly small poops among normal poops again. No other symptoms yet.

40g is probably too much to lose in a week for a small Netherland Dwarf like him, am I right?

We still have some Fenbendazole left, so we started the first dose immediately to rule out EC. Since we gave both Fenbendazole and Samylin simultaneously the last time though, we aren’t sure which was the one that worked in tackling the actual issue. Of course it could’ve also been both working together, but if it’s not EC and instead a congenital liver issue OR toxins from food, then I would think Samylin was the one that helped and Fenbendazole had nothing to do with it?

For a while we stopped giving him vegetables since the vet mentioned toxins like chemicals or pesticides could be the culprit, but I did recently reintroduce some back into his diet, thinking that the previous bout was due to EC and since he stabilised, it would be okay to feed veggies again. So we are starting to think that the weight loss wasn’t due to EC but instead congenital or caused by pesticides in the greens. But that wouldn’t explain the other symptoms, would it…?

We will definitely be keeping a close eye on his weight and if it drops too drastically within the next few days, a vet visit will be in order. Any insight on the current situation would be appreciated though!

        Thanks for reading xx

I know I skimmed over your post a while back but I don’t remember if I saw anything being testing on worms? I might be wrong and he was tested but that’s the only thing that came to my mind. Have you done X-rays or CTs to see if something is enlarged or out of place?

Poor little guy, and yeah that is a lot to loose for a little guy like him. I know house rabbit society posted that there is a new illness ( I forget the name, but I think it’s on their homepage) that the symptoms mimick EC but’s actually something different that they did test runs of different meds in the buns and some it helped them. I don’t know exactly where it is occurring at in the states or out of the country too.

I wished I knew what to say about K, but all I can say is my own issues with Bombur’s EC.The EC is mainly affecting his kidneys, so obviously not the liver. He’s never lost weight with it though, but it does cause him to get gas and stasis if I’m not super strict with his diet. He’s also been on 4 rounds of Oxibendazole because it can flare up at any time. He was diagnosed in early February, so 4 rounds already is a lot. My vet told me sometimes it even takes multiple rounds of treatment before they even see improvement.

I hope he gets better soon <3

I second the testing for parasites, if you haven’t already.

Also, just a thought, but have you switched hays lately? Some are more nutritious than others, and in a tiny bun like K, it can make a big difference (both calorically AND in how much hay the little one gobbles up).

We suspected worms too the first time, but the weakness in hind legs and other signs didn’t quite tally with a worm issue. Once we started the Fenbendazole and Samylin he improved, so we concluded it wasn’t that.

The previous vet advised us to only take an X-ray if he didn’t improve after two weeks of medication; but he did so we never went through with an X-ray since it wasn’t necessary anymore.

Nope we haven’t tested for parasites. I’ve been told it’s quite unlikely the last time he lost so much weight, and he improved so we didn’t do any worm tests. Guess we’ll have to monitor and see if it’s the same this time.

Nope no hay changes. The only change in his diet was the reintroduction of vegetables, which we currently suspect could be the cause as well.

Just a thought, could it be that the weight loss is due to the veggies without possible poisoning? Our vet told us that veggies are essentially empty of calories – they have nutrients but don’t contribute to fattening a bun. Could the loss of 40g be due to Kurotta filling up on veggies and so eating less pellets/hay?

He only gets veggies maybe 2 times a week max. It didn’t affect his hay and pellet intake as far as I could tell
