Hi guys! As some of you may know Toby just got spayed! She is now living with my mother permanently. It was supposed to be temporary because I have Ollie living with me so it was to keep them apart, but my mom got too attached and begged me to leave her at home. As sad as this makes me, I wanted to do something to make my mom happy.
Anyways, (sorry for the story lol) I want to get Ollie a friend since I am working a lot.. I’ll be getting a male since Ollie is also a male. I wanted to know how the bonding process would be for 2 males if any of you have experience? I read online that females and males bond better but to get another spay will break the bank! Is it ok to bond 1 neutered male with an uneutered male? What’s the best thing to do? I would be getting one of Ollie’s real brothers (same breeder he came from). As soon as he is old enough to take home. I think in about a month he may be ready but imnot sure if Ollie will be neutered by then

You cannot bond bunnies if only one is neutered. Both need neutering. The bonding protocol is the same for 2 males as it would be for any sex pairing – neuter both, allow hormones to disipate, pre bond for one month at least, start bonding sessions.

I’m pretty sure any two rabbits need to be spayed or neutered to be bonded, no matter the gender. Don’t rush things. Wait until Ollie is neutered and a couple of weeks later (to let the hormones die down) you can get another bun and start bonding. You could maybe get a rescue bun, they’re normally all fixed and vaccinated

Thanks! If I end up not getting a rescue and the bunny is 8 weeks and uneutered, will I have to keep them seperate until the new bunny is neutered? I want a lop and they don’t have those in the rescues in my area I would prob have to get him from the breeder

Yes, you’ll need to keep them separate. Bunnies that aren’t bonded cannot be kept together.

Bunnies must always be kept separate until they are both neutered. There is no way round that. If you buy a baby, you have to commit to keeping them separate until the baby is old enough to be neutered, plus a month after the neuter, so you’re looking at least 4 months of keeping them separate.

Please remember babies need to be with their mothers until 8 weeks if you buy another baby.

I suggest saving up, neutering your bunny, and then think about getting a second bunny (who will also need to be neutered before any bonding can begin).

Don’t look at breed too much. Everyone really wants a lop at some point. Have a look around the shelter and see if one if them catch your eye. You would be giving a shelter bun a home and also freeing up space for another bun to be rescued. And at the same time saving money by getting a bun that’s already neutered and vaccined.
