I know that there are a lot of opinions on whether to put the food and water in a litter box, but here is where I am currently at and I wanted to get some more thoughts.

Dharma pees and poops profusely where she eats. After cleaning up many pools of urine in her pen (and having it kicked and splashed on me and spread all over the pen) I have added a 2nd litterbox to her pen and set her food and water in it.

Now she primarily poops and pees where her food and water is (and the other, original box gets less use) and at times, pees in her food 🙁

I’ve considered just building one long litter box with room for sleeping and room for eating.

I’ve considered “pee pads” near the food and her regular litterbox, but I am afraid she will eat the pee pad.

What are others doing to contain the eating time poop and pee?

        Thanks!

This is definitely a problem for lots a people, I’m just going to give a few different options

1: Puppy pads definitely work great for most things like this, but if you’re afraid your rabbit might eat it, it’s really up to you, but you could always try.

2: where do you keep her hay? I’ve found that loading the litter box with hay works great or having a basket full of hay right next to it

3: I think your idea of building something for sounds great! You could try getting the bottom of a small rabbit cage (found at pet stores) and putting a small litter box to the side of it and then on the other laying down newspaper or a puppy pad ( whatever works best for you) and putting the food there. This worked really well for when my first rabbit had this problem. The only problem is that these do cost money ( some can be really pricey) so I don’t know if this is something you want to spend it on or…

I’m not an expert on this or anything but I hope it can help you out!

I agree you have to think about if your bun is a chewer. If she’s a chewer definitely don’t use anything she could ingest. Most bunnies do indeed poop where they eat. Keep the hay in the litter box or next to it, yes it will get peed on, but it’s not that big of a deal if she eats it. If you’re only feeding her the standard 2 tbsp- 1/4 cup of pellets a day and greens then I’d still keep that out of her litter box and only have her food bowl out when she’s actually feeding. You can put a towel under her water dish so if she poops and pees on it you quickly dump it and spray with some white vinegar and you’re good to go.

Is she spayed? Litter training is next to impossible if she’s not spayed.

A grated litter box is useful. You could DIY one and put the litter underneath so Dharma can’t get to it even if she’s a chewer. My litter box is grated and I put Kurotta’s hay on top of it. He poops where he eats too
