So one of my little girls has just recently lost quite a bit of weight. She has always weighed roughly 2.70 lbs. When I was petting her last Tuesday (08/14), I noticed that I could feel her bones in her hind-area, and I never used to be able to feel them before. I ordered a digital scale that day. It came a few days later and I have been weighing her every day since, with the results below:
Normal Weight: 2.70 lbs
08/16: 2.58 lbs
08/17: 2.62 lbs
08/18: 2.44 lbs
08/19: 2.50 lbs
She has been relatively lethargic and not as active for the past 2 weeks-ish, and have noticed that she isn’t eating nearly as many pellets as she usually does for about a week now.
She went into stasis-like symptoms on 08/16 and has had very tiny poops. I’ve been doing my absolute best to keep her hydrated, eating, and moving around. She is eating her greens relatively normally, and I’ve been trying to get her to eat as much hay as possible – which she has been doing okay with. She was doing really great last night, despite the significant weight drop (2.44 lbs) – but her behavior was great – she was active and running around, flopping, jumping, binkying, and eating hay on her own; her poops were getting almost back to normal size. This morning I woke up to find very little to no poops in her litter box, and very little of her pellets and hay eaten. She has had tiny poops again all morning. I am concerned… I’ve brought bunnies back from stasis several times before, but I’ve never seen such improvement, then back to square one again the next day.
A few weeks ago I noticed that she had little white worms in her poops, again. The vet diagnosed them as pinworms @ the end of last year, and we’ve treated them twice now, and I just noticed that they came back — or never left entirely.
I’m taking her into the vet on Tuesday (their earliest available appointment), but am curious if the pinworms could be causing all this (lethargy, loss of appetite/pellet intake, weight loss)? She is not spayed and she is 5 years old. My greatest worry is cancer.
I’m giving her alfalfa hay, along with her normal timothy and oat hay, for the time being – trying to keep her weight up.
Does anyone have any advice or suggestions? Experience with rapid weight loss like this? Anything specific I should ask the vet to check while we’re there besides getting blood work done to check for cancer?
Thank you so much.
