Hi guys, you might have seen my other thread regarding Buttercup’s bald patch. She was treated for mites on Thursday as a precaution because we wasn’t sure of the origin of the baldness. She had no flakes or anything, however I’ve noticed just now that it’s looking a little dry. I’m not sure if this is because we’re still grooming her daily with a grooming mitt (though trying to avoid the patch) or if it’s where she’s still grooming herself there (or at least trying) Peanut is also grooming her in that spot a little. Is there anything I can use topically to combat the dryness?

I would think that you can use sudocrem, since I’ve been told by a vet before that it’s safe for urine scald and sore hocks

That stuff is awesome! I often steal some from Chewie’s first aid kit

Popping to the shop shortly to get some! How many times a day can I apply it?

Excellent, thank you. I’ve used it twice already Hopefully in a few days it’ll look better.

I *think* the dryness is getting better but not sure if I’m just being hopeful.

Also, she was giving one of her ears a good wash and then scratched it and I thought I’d check as she only groomed the one ear rather than both so maybe there’s something wrong with said ear. I noticed 2 little red dots? I don’t think it’s from scratching as it’s quite low down inside the ear. Hmm :-/

Those do sound like mites. Keep treating, I guess… poor bub. xx

Would it be safe to give another treatment so soon? I think the stuff the vet used on the 16th was Ivermectin(?) or something similar. If so, is it safe to buy over the counter or does it warrant another vet visit? I’ve got an appointment on the 6th Sep to get them both checked out again – I need to discuss Peanut’s options as he’ll have finished his cisapride by then and I don’t feel it’s helped him (although he’s on it til 30th Aug so things could still improve I guess) Couldnt get an earlier appointment as vet is on holiday.

I’ve been checking her ears 2x a day and they haven’t got any worse. She’s also not itching or grooming excessively. Hmm.

I was researching and stumbled upon this thread:

That’s what the little dots look like although Buttercup’s might be slightly smaller and there’s still only two of them.

I wish I could be sure… Maybe just pop into the vet’s and see if they’ll give you some more for at home? Or a farm shop might have it, if you’re near one…

If they look like the spots in the other thread, I would say they are the result of scratching or irritation. You would be surprised how far they can stick their foot into their ear.

What sort of irritation? Just a general itch or something?

I’m thinking it’s probably not mites as I would assume her ears would have gotten worse?

On a bright note, her bald patch is growing back

I’ve just checked her ears again, twice and I cannot see those two dots. I’ll check again tomorrow when we’ve got good natural light just to be sure!

Just from scratching. Does she get wax in her ears?

Atlas has scratched/cut his ears inside before when his nails got too long, so I wouldn’t rule that out
