        Hi all

I am wondering if rabbits specifically need Timothy Hay or if other types are fine. Hocus Pocus started out on Oxbow Timothy Hay but he barely eats it…I bought Oxbow Orchard Grass Hay and he LOVES it..so can he just have that or does he NEED Timothy Hay? I’ve been mixing the two together but he usually picks out the orchard grass and leaves the rest

        question 2

HP eats Oxbow Young Rabbit pellets (alfalfa based) he is now 7 months old, the bag says to feed these pellets til 1 year old but I have seen many of you comment on other threads that adult food should be introduced at 6 months? what should I do?

          Hi,
He is supposed to be fed alfalfa hay and pellets until around 6 months old and then given Timothy or other hays only as alfalfa is too rich for adult buns( but great for growin buns who need all the protein and calcium in it). Have you taken him to a rabbit savvy vet to know what his diet should be? Timothy and orchard hays are good, but do not buy alfala at all. Any others hays are good and make sure whatever he likes that you get that as they need hay to keep from getting points.

Young pellets are usually phased out around or before 6 months(again, have you seen a vet?) then you follow the directions it says on the bag on how to transition and then if he has any diarrhea then go back to the old pellets and do the transition even slower.

          I hope this helps

For pellets, you can switch him from junior pellets to adult when they have stopped growing. For most breeds, that is around 6 months old but for giant breeds, you might need to keep him on junior for a while longer as they stop growing later.

For hay, any grass hay is fine. Timothy, orchard, oat and meadow are great ones. If your bun is picking out the orcbard and leaving the rest, save yourself the money and just buy orchard!

(Just a note, young buns that are still growing can be given alfalfa hay but if he’s getting junior pellets which are usually alfalfa based, then alfalfa hay isnt necessary. )

he’s a Holland lop so I’m pretty sure he’s done growing but our neighbors have a female Holland lop and she’s much bigger than him and she’s almost a year however I know Hocus Pocus parents were both on the small side too
