Hi everyone! My name’s Olivia! :-)I’m here to see if anyone can help me with this problem I just found out. My rabbit Cindy has been having some problems with her feet getting matted! Her feet never have really gotten matted before so this is kinda new to me! They’re really reallyyy pee stained, crust has formed. I was thinking maybe soaking her feet in some lukewarm water or so? I tried cutting some of the crust of the sides off but it’s all matted. The other foot is not that matted actually, just one! I just read something about trying some cornstarch on the web right now? If that is safe to do, can someone give me some advice on how to do it? Oh and I don’t have any rabbit shampoo at the moment so is there a substitute? I would just put little bit of water just for her feet, not submerging her of course! Any help would be greatly appreciated!! 🙂 – Olivia & Cindy

The main problem here isn’t how her feet look, its about why they are covered in pee.

Has she been drinking excessively? Are her legs also wet at all? She could have a urinary infection or a kidney problem causing her to pee excessively, which is why she’s covered in pee – healthy rabbits don’t tend to repeatedly get covered in pee.

No, her drinking habit is normal. It caught my eye that she just really likes being in her litterbox and the litter box gets really dirty really fast. I try cleaning it as often as I can though! I also never really saw her have her fur matted around her bum. She cleans herself a lot. Her feet not that often but she does clean them as I have seen. Oh and no, her legs aren’t wet at all. Everything seems normal though, she eats and drinks well. I think she gets her feet wet because of staying in her peed litter box and then probably afterwards doesn’t clean them and then the pee dries out?

Their feet fur can be quite rough compared to other parts of the body, but the fact that it’s crusty could indicate something. Could you try uploading a picture of the crusty part?

Bunnies clean their feet pretty well and don’t like to leave them wet. How often do you clean her litter box? If she’s constantly sitting in a soiled box then perhaps you could make a grate for the box so she doesn’t sit in her pee. Something like that: http://www.wildrescuetexas.org/dcare.html
