I found a bunny covered in 50+ ticks and with a larva living in a puncture wound on its rump 2 weeks ago. Removed the ticks, got her to the vet, and she just finished up 14 days of antibiotics. The only hard flooring in my house is the kitchen, so I’ve given her free reign when I’m not cooking. I’ve blocked off any nooks and crannies (eg to the side of the fridge or under the stove) and I’m pretty good about cleaning spills, crumbs, etc. before letting her back into the kitchen. However, are there any risks associated with this that I’m totally missing? Eventually I want to let her wander the entire house/carpeted areas, but for now it’s safest that I let her stay in the kitchen.

First time pet owner, so this is all new territory to me.

Poor little bun, thanks for saving her. The only risks I see is her eating the cabinetry, getting into an open cabinet if she learns how to open them or finding old food that dropped under the cabinet. And make sure anything that can fit her head that should be blocked off so she can’t get stuck.

Thank you for the response @Bunny House. I’ll use the “can her head fit” rule moving forward.

Any thoughts regarding her eating food crumbs off the ground? Are there any foods that can seriously affect her even in minuscule quantities?

No problem. I would always try to keep food crumbs off the floor, so as soon as something drops, pick it up and it will keep you in a good habit of keeping the floor clean so less need to worry for her roaming in there

Thank you for taking in this bunny, she’s so lucky

My rabbit’s “home base” is in our kitchen. She occasionally picks up a few crumbs, but we’ve had no problems otherwise. As Bunny house said, the main thing is making sure the cabinets stay closed. If your bun figures out how to push them open you can always get some child-proof locks for cabinets with dangerous chemicals.

As a side note, bunnies sometimes have a hard time getting traction on tile flooring since they have no pads on their feet like dogs and cats do. So it can be good to put down a towel or a throw rug for them to be more comfortable.
