I’m adopting a 2nd rabbit most likely tomorrow, and I have a neutered adult male at home now. The bun I am most interested in is getting spayed today, although there are a few others at the shelter that I’ll have my boy meet as well when we go in so he can “choose” his new friend. I know that after a spay/neuter, it takes a few weeks for the hormones to dissipate through the body so I am wondering if I should take his interactions with female rabbits who have been recently spayed with a grain of salt?

If I do end up bringing this girl home, I would start pre-bonding immediately and then after 2 weeks or so start initial introductions–is this appropriate or should I wait longer considering her recent spay? Any advice/tips would be so appreciated!!

You’re going to want to let her settle in for at least two weeks, before doing any prebonding. The new bun needs time to settle in and get used to her new surroundings before dealing with an intrusive new scent. After the initial two weeks, then you cane begin prebonding, and you’ll want to do that for a good month to really get them used to each others’ scents. Girls take a little longer for their hormones to die down, and she could have hormonal spikes for 1-2 months. After you’ve prebonded at least a month then you can go ahead and start short sessions in neutral territory.
