› FORUM › HOUSE RABBIT Q & A › Trapped wind – should I see the vet?
Last night Batatinha started tummy pressing and sitting awkwardly, shifting position loads and shaking. She refused food an sat grinding her teeth next to me (she came looking for comfort – really unlike her) and let me comfort her. Her behaviour was completely off character and her seeking comfort scared me (she’s very independent). She also weed all over my pillow which was weird because she’s litter trained and obsessive in her litter habits.
I did some tummy massage and spoke gently to her while stroking her head while my partner organised an emergency vet appointment. When he was off the phone we swapped roles so that I could get changed from pyjamas into clothes to go to the vet.
When I went back upstairs Tinha was busy throwing things around (back to normal) and casually destroying her blanket (also normal). I tried to stroke her and she headbutted me away (normal). I offered hay which she ate happily and she then hopped into the litter tray and pooped 2 misshapen large pellets then zoomed around the room and jumped on Casper.
We cancelled the vet appointment and kept an eye on her all night.
Today she is binkying, eating, pooping and misbehaving as normal.
She scared us both so much last night. I was sure she had early stasis. Should I go to the vet with her or do you think it may just have been wind? Tummy feels good and she’s completely normal. We were only at the vet on Tuesday (clean bill of health). I don’t want to stress her with an unnecessary vet trip again! Any advice? She seems totally normal today!
Maybe you should just wait and see, but if the symptoms return, then take her to a vet. I’m glad she’s doing better!
Just keep monitoring her. It sounds like she was in discomfort trying to get the misshapen poops out. Keep some baby gas drops on hand in case she has another episode that way you can give her some as soon as you see her in discomfort. Is she shedding at all right now?
I would also say wait and see… my boy did this to me earlier this week and was back to normal a few hours later… My guess is the tummy rubs helped a lot.
For future scares like this, keep some baby gas medication (you can buy it at the pharmacy – just get the non flavoured one so it has no sugars or anything) and give that at the first sign of gas trouble… you can give it every hour for the first 3 hours… that along with the belly rubes, when caught fast enough, will help it along before it progresses in to stasis.
The only time it definitely wont help is if she has a blockage – bunny’s can’t throw up… so if they have a build of hair from shedding or ate something they shouldn’t and their body can’t pass it through. That is something that 100% needs the vet… but as she pooped then there is no blockage
**OH and another little thing that I find helps is to get them moving, even if they don’t want too (who wants to move when they have gas pain right?) so I moved Rupert to a new spot in the house that he had never been so that he felt he had to explore… with my previous bunny I would kind of nicely chase her so that she would run from me (which she usually did if she saw the gas drops in my hand anyway lol) and that got things moving too!
She had gas at least 15 times (scares you every time) and only once did I end up having to take her to the vet because the gas drops/tummy rubs and getting her moving around didn’t work.
Sending good vibes your way!
Awesome advice as always from the binkybunny members! I’m keeping a close eye but she’s back to normal now! I have simeticone baby gas drops (infacol ) buy they’re orange flavour (no sugar though). I’m still nervous about giving them though incase I accidentally poison her!
Asriel and Bombur (great names by the way) they are all shedding. I’m pulling out the equivalent of a whole other rabbit from each of them every day! Batatinha is the most tricky at this time – she’s self appointed groomer of all rabbits, humans and furniture so I am worried about how much fur she’s ingesting.
The moving thing is good Nutmeg! She rarely sits still so her not moving scared me so much yesterday! Thankfully she’s back to binkying and climbing everything again today. Tummy massage was amazing – she loved it!
And I’m so glad that other people get scared too when their bunnies have an off day!

hahaha thanks! Undertale and The Hobbit
It might be a good idea for you to take a lint roller to them at least once a day that way she’s won’t ingest too much fur. I’ve also found rinsing my boys’ water dish twice a day also helps. Az sheds like crazy and makes a mess in the water dish, so I give it a quick rinse and wipe twice a day to make sure they won’t ingest too much while they drink.
Water bowl needs changing all the time because SOMEONE (stares at Tuppence) likes to poop in it.
So they have 2 water bowls. And we rinse them both multiple times a day.
I’m not sure that people put this much time and effort into their children you know… why are rabbits so difficult!
On the topic of moulting, Tuppence looks such a state at the minute it’s hard not to laugh! Such a patchy, werewolfy moult and her facial moult lines look like angry eyebrows!

Hey A&B – I’ve been having a hard time finding a good brush to get the fur off of them, and interested in your lint roller suggestion… do you just go buy a regular lint roller (with the sticky tape surface) and roll it over them?
Just asking as I wanted to check if it was gentle enough… I don’t want to accidentally pull out non loose hair lol
Yes! It’s the only thing that really works for either of my boys, and they don’t mind it either. It’s super gentle on them too. Bombur is super fluffy and Az has really fine silky fur, so it works perfectly. It takes the majority of it up too. I think I use like 3-4 sheets a night per bun. It seems like a lot, but it lasts me a whole month.
Thanks so much A&B ![]()
Glad to know that Batatinha is doing well!
@Nutmeg if you’re afraid the roller is too sticky you can always roll it a few times on your clothes to reduce the stickiness ![]()
